Curriculum Information Autumn 2016 Year 6

English / In Year 6 the children will be basing their work around two key texts. The first text is ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’ by Louis Sachar. During the first half term the children will explore the issue of bullying and undertake formal letter writing as well as planning and writing their own narrative chapters.
In the second half of the term the children will focus on the text, ‘Run Rabbit Run’ by Barbara Mitchelhill. This historical novel is set during World War Two and links with the topic of ‘Courageous Coventry’. During this work the children will have the opportunity to explore daily life during this significant period in history and write in a range of different styles and formats. Throughout the term, the children will explore the key rules of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Maths / Whilst in Year 6 there is a thrust towards preparing children for the Y6 SATs; they will continue not only to practise necessary mathematical skills but also use and apply skills across a range of contexts, through investigative work and problem solving opportunities. The children will increase their mental calculation ability and develop their skill in selecting and using efficient methods to add and subtract whole numbers and decimals with up to two places. They will develop their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages as well as use their knowledge of the times tables to derive related multiplication and division facts involving decimals.
Science / This term, the children will be studying the topic of the human body. During this they will identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. They will learn to recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function and describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans. Later in the term, they will explore how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences.
Information Technology / Throughout the term, the children will use the internet for research purposes. They will learn how to frame questions in order to locate appropriate information and then to evaluate the suitability of the information they have found.
Topic –
Geography/ History
Technology/ICT/Art / During this term, the children in Year 6 will be focusing on the topic of ‘Courageous Coventry’ Through this; they will explore how Coventry and the lives of people who live in the city have changed since 1930. They will consider the key role Coventry played in World War Two and how the legacy of this is still evident today.
RE / In RE, the children will explore the ‘Moral Maze and will have the opportunity to discuss how people make decisions about how they should act and respond to others based on their faith.
Music / The children will continue to have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument as part of ‘Class Band’ led by a qualified teacher from the Performing Arts Service.
Physical Education / The children in both year 6 classrooms need to bring their outdoor kit on a Monday and their indoor kit on a Thursday. The children will be taught Gymnastics and Striking and Fielding Games, developing their bat and ball skills and throwing and catching. They will have access to specialist coaching to help them further develop their key skills.
Personal, Social and Health Education / In the first half term, the children will focus on a unit called “New Beginnings”, which includes teaching children the skills needed to develop friendships and take responsibility for themselves and others. In the second half term the children will focus on ‘Taking responsibility’.
Modern languages (French) / The children in Year 6 will extend their knowledge to include new vocabulary and will begin to develop their conversation skills, asking and answering questions with a partner and writing in sentences.
