Welcome to the TASC Sweepstakes award winning KPHS STUCO!

What is Stuco?

Student Council isa student-run organization that focuses on promoting school spirit, uniting the student body, providing a service to the school and to the community, and having FUN!

What do I have to do to join?

First, I need your info! Please visit the Stuco Website and click the “New Member Contact Info” link and fill out the form completely. Email is the primary way I will contact you over the summer and during the school year, so please send me your information as soon as possible. Second, attendthe mandatory orientation meeting May 3 at 7:00pm in the KPHS cafetorium (this is for students and parents). You will get all the information you need about becoming a Stuco member, including “work on hours”. IF YOU MISS THE ORIENTATION, DON’T WORRY! YOU CAN STILL JOIN STUCO, JUST SEND YOUR CONTACT INFO AND START COLLECTING YOUR WORK-ON HOURS ASAP.

What’s a work-on hour?

All new members (incoming Freshmen, Sophomores,Juniors and Seniors who weren’t in Stuco) will have to provide hours of service to the school and to the community. Each student will be required to complete a total of 30“Work-on” hoursover the summer in order to become a member of KPHS StuCo. Work-on Hours are recorded on sheets provided in this packet. They need to be documented and signed by an adult with whom you worked. (They need to include the organization’s name, the person’s name with whom you worked, and a phone number so that they can be verified).Please be as accurate as possible. *There is always a temptation to stretch 30 minutes into an hour, but remember that honesty and integrity are key principles that a StuCo representative should display at all times.

What counts towards work-on?

Community Work-on hours can be any group, organization, or business that needs volunteer help. Remember you can not get paid for your hours. I have included a list of some possible (but certainly not all) opportunities. Also, make sure you check the Stuco website to become aware of any specific volunteer opportunities. FYI- Work-on opportunities include helping teachers to pack up for the end of the year. You may begin getting your work-on hours May 3, 2011 and all hours must be completed by the day you register 8/9 and 8/10 (check the KPHS website for specific registration information).

When do I turn in my stuff and when’s the first meeting?

You will turn in your work-on sheets and pay for your T-Shirts during on the day that you register (8/9 or 8/10). The Stuco dueswill be$20 (cash only, cost includes your shirt), CASH ONLY. The first mandatory meeting is August 10, 2011 at 4:00pm in the KPHSCafeteria. At this meeting we give info regarding elections, and sign up to work during the Teacher Work Days August 16-19th. We’ll also talk about important Stuco information.

Teacher Work Days Sign-ups

Each student mustwork a total of 2hours during the Teacher's workdays, August 16-19. There will be a sign up at the August 10th meeting for available slots. You must work 1 two-hour shift. Hours will be logged by signing in and out in Mr. Stamm’s room to get credit. These hours do NOT count into the 30 that are required for working-on.

After I’ve done all that, am I a member?

YES, once you have completed these requirements you will become an official Student Council member! Once you establish yourself as StuCo members you need to realize you are the pulse of the school. As a group, we will attend events, share in giving morning announcements about what’s happening around the campus, and decorate the school to promote pride and spirit for KPHS. We will honor teachers and students for special achievements, offer community support in the form of volunteering and raising money. We also have a ton of school wide projects such as Homecoming, March Madness and The Carnival of Hope! Every committee will have responsibilities around the school to constantly uphold the reputation of Student Council. You will be responsible for varying tasks and attendance at school functions. We take this responsibility very seriously! We will attend Leadership Conferences and Student Council events around the state. We will work together and function as committees, as a council and as a school. We will strive to always show unity to each other and to our school.

I’m a member, now what?

Once you are a Student Council member, each StuCo member must complete a monthly point sheet with a designated number of points towards school/community service or school spirit each month. (Points are awarded very similar to hours, in many cases one hour = 1 point.) Each month I will look at the calendar and give you as many opportunities as possible to earn your points. Earning points will help you establish and keep your status as a KPHS StuCo member. Failure to maintain points will result in a probationary letter. Two probationary letters is cause for dismissal from the council.

Are there meetings?

Yes, Stuco holds mandatory meetings once a month and each committee is responsible to hold at least one an additional meeting during the month. All members must attend every mandatory monthly meeting or have a written notice from a parent or coach given toMr. Stamm beforethe meeting date to be excused. You will receive a probationary letter for the first unexcused missed meeting and you will be subject to dismissal on the second.

Is there a dress code?

Yes, we have an informal and formal dress code. DO NOT buy the formal dress attire unless specifically asked to do so (not everyone needs to have this outfit).

Informal DressCode

Consists of the student council T-shirt,blue jeans or khaki shorts (jeans and shorts must meet all school dress code policies) and sneakers or flip-flops. You are required to wear this"uniform" whenever you are representing the Student Council at a function or game and you can wear them any day at school to proudly represent our organization. (You will not need to wear them during the work-on days with the teachers in August.) Note: some events may not allow shorts to be worn; you will receive notice of such events ahead of time.

Formal Dress Code

Guys-white oxford shirt or Stuco polo, black tie (not required if wearing polo), khaki pants, black or brown belt and black or brown dress shoes.

Girls- white blouse or Stuco polo, khaki skirt (no shorter than two inches above knee) or pants, brown or black belt, brown or black dress shoes (heels optional).

You will be required to wear formal dress whenever Stuco acts as a host to a function, two examples are Open-House and Back to School Night. You will be reminded when to be in formal dress.

How do I get involved in leadership?

Officers and Senatorswere elected through the council at the end of the 10-11 school year, and are currently serving their term in office.

Freshmen Delegates will be appointed by the Stuco Sponsors and Officers. If interested in running you must sign up at the first meeting (August 10th), printand complete an application packet from the Stuco website

Committees are open to any Stuco member. They truly are the face of Stuco! They may be formed as early as the first meeting. Committees will be chaired by Stuco Officers and Senators. Each committee has its own specialty (ex. Spirit and Homecoming), and will work on a variety of projects throughout the year. Joining a committee is the best way to make a difference at KPHS. Committees will hold meetings at least once a month. All committee members are required to attend these meetings. Committee Chairs are responsible for setting and running meetings as well as ensuring that all committee obligations are met. A complete list of the committees can be found below.

Student Council Yearlong Committee Summary ’11-‘12

Drug, Alcohol, Safety, and Health (D.A.S.H.)

Student Council is a friend to our student body, right? Well, what do friends do? They don’t let friends drink and drive, smoke pot…or do anything that would cause their bodies harm. We want healthy friends! With D.A.S.H., we will truly be a friend to our peers, showing them the hazards of things like drugs, and alcohol, and demonstrating the benefits of being safety and health conscious. Demonstrations, posters, statistical announcements, and more will be the tools of this committee. D.A.S.H. will lead the fight in reaching our peers.

Energy and Environment (E&E)

This committee will be in charge of school beatification and spreading environmental awareness. Projects will be centered towards keeping the grounds of KPHS looking neat and educating the school of environmental issues. Committee members can do things tons of things such as hosting a school cleanup day, making sure old posters & banners are taken out of the hallways, or holding an Earth Day project. Other projects will be energy and environment minded such as beautifying the green spaces, “Turn your lights out!” reminders for classroom switches, etc. We hope that this committee will be able to make a difference in the overall attitude and appearance of our school this year.

Scrapbooking

This is your opportunity to help leave a legacy of all the awesome things Stuco did this year. Along with creating an innovative scrapbook that will be displayed at monthly Stuco meetings, making monthly slideshows, and collages; this committee has the privilege of knowing their hard work will be displayed at the TASC Annual Conference in Arlington. Leave memories for future generations!

Social Activities & Student Interaction (SASI)

Stuco works hard, so we should play hard too! Members of the Social Activities & Student Interaction committee will assist in planning fun Stuco socials and events. They will bring the council together in a welcoming environment that is fun for all. Our goal with this committee is to help us become a closer, more family-like council that is fully dedicated to the students.

Spirit Crew

Spirit committee is in charge spreading school spirit. They will try to unite the student body by creating an outgoing atmosphere by hosting morning shows, lunch competitions, cheering at games and more. The Spirit Crew will strengthen the school by building relationships!

Staff/Teacher Appreciation/Recognition (STAR)

Our faculty does a lot for us, andSTAR is geared towards showing our gratitude to the many wonderful people who help us get through each day. Remember, happy teachers equal happy kids! Let’s show the faculty how much we care.

Welcome Crew

New students arrive to our school every week. Let’s make show them how friendly KPHS is! Welcome Crew will give school tours, allow new students to sit with them during lunch, and prepare welcome gifts. Student Council is here to make KPHS a better place, Welcome Crew will ensure a new student’s first impression is a good one!
