DINOSAURS IN MOTION OPENS AT MOODY GARDENS

Interactive Dinosaur Sculptures Bring Art and Science to The Discovery Museum

GALVESTON, TEXAS (August 25, 2016)— Starting September 24, Moody Gardens will be presenting a brand new exhibit in the Discovery Museum. Dinosaurs in Motion will feature 14 fully interactive, life-size dinosaur sculptures made of recycled metal created by artist John Payne.

The immersive exhibit blends together science, art and innovation through life-sized metal sculptures. Each unique sculpture has exposed mechanics to illustrate science and technology principles in a fun and engaging way. The lifelike sculptures touch on these educational topics throughout the exhibit in a way much different than just reading about the goliath creatures that roamed the earth. “The dinosaurs by themselves were not enough,” Payne said about creating the pieces, “I had to bring life to them.”

Coming to life from sketches, the dinosaurs were crafted from recycled metals and junkyard parts. Payne modeled each piece of the dinosaurs after their real-life anatomy for the perfectly accurate recreations. Present on each sculpture, guests can see hammer marks that were left in the process of bringing the giant works of art to life. “I don’t try to hide the hammer marks or the cutting marks or the welding marks,” Payne said. “They’re like the energy of the person who’s building it. It’s not a machine that’s building these, it’s a human being pounding with a hammer.”

“We are very excited to bring Dinosaurs in Motion to Moody Gardens this September,” said John Zendt President and CEO of Moody Gardens. “Being able to interact with the life-sized dinosaur sculptures offers a unique opportunity to learn about the incredible creatures. The artistic use of recycled materials offers a creative element that we are sure our guests will enjoy.”

Admission is $14.95 for adults; $10.95 for seniors ages 65 and over and children ages 4 to 12; and children 3 and under are free.
