Cherokee Internet Workshop

This internet workshop will introduce you to our book Soft Rain. This book takes place in the mountains of North Carolina right before and during the removal of the Cherokee. You will have an opportunity to explore information on the Internet. Take notes in your Cherokee Packet on the internet workshop page. Come prepared to share your information at our workshop session. We will discuss possible ways of presenting your information (Inspirations, PowerPoint, Graphic Organizer, What Am I Poem, Who Am I Poem, or I Poem). http://www.graphic.org/index.html

Remember when you are presenting your information, it is good to make sure you have covered the five W’s (who, what, when, where, and why) and how.

1. Go to the bookmark I have set for the Cherokee Trail of Tears

http://www.rosecity.net/tears/trail/tearsnht.html

Now Click on each of the sites below. Read about the reasons for the removal and what happened along the way. Take notes about points you think are important and be ready to talk about them as a class.

Overview of the Trail

Map of the Trail

"Many days pass and people die very much"

2. Go to the kids thinkquest http://library.thinkquest.org/J0110322/index.htm

You will click on Why it happened to find out some important information about the real reasons behind the removal of the Cherokee. This will help us to better understand when it started and why people wanted to get rid of the Cherokee people. You will then click on Biographies to find how all of this information comes together. This area should help you understand who wanted the removal to happen and who was fighting against it. Take good notes and be ready to share with us all of the information you uncovered.

3. Go to the following website: http://cherokeehistory.com/image1a.html and search through the images. Think about what the people fighting for the removal were thinking. Think about what the people fighting against the removal might be feeling. Finally, think about what the Cherokee were thinking during the entire process from the signing of the treaties to traveling the trails. Record your feelings to one of the above in a poem to share with the class.
