PSYCHODYNAMIC APPROACH

The development of Neo-Freudian theories

Research assignment

Choose ONE of the following theorists to investigate. No two people may research the same person.

·  Carl Jung

·  Alfred Adler

·  Karen Horney

·  Anna Freud

·  Erik Erikson

·  Erich Fromm

·  Melanie Klein

·  Donald Winnicott

Areas of investigation

Beginning your research

Creating tables helps when collecting information. Use the examples as a GUIDE. You can copy and paste them into a document to begin your own notes, or create your own variation.

Remember that all theorists emphasized different concepts and structures. You might find more information in some areas than others. For example, Freud focused far less on adult behavior, while Erikson divided it into 8 stages.

Section 1: Identify the key areas of their theories

What does the theorist say about each of the following and how does this differ from Freud?

Freud / Neo-Freudian
Influence of motivation and drives
Influence of childhood experience
Structure of personality
Functioning of personality

Section 2: Application - How did these theorists explain human behavior?

Sexual development / Aggression / Moral development / Development of personality
Interaction of conscious/unconscious
Influence of motivation and drives

Section 3: Research

  1. What research methods did the theorist use to collect information for his/her theories?
  2. What assessment methods have arisen from this research? (eg. Jung and the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator)

Section 4: Limitations

  1. To what extent was the research affected by culture, gender, and/or ethics?
  2. What evidence exists to support the theories? To what extent is the evidence problematic?

The product

You are required to produce a presentation on your chosen Neo-Freudian with the following elements:

·  A power point that contains ONLY key ideas and images necessary to communicate the information (the last slide is to contain your bibliography)

·  A chart/note-taking sheet in the form of a handout that will help your classmates take notes during your presentation (YOU are required to make sufficient photocopies of these)

·  A BRIEF activity that either assesses your classmates understanding AND/OR helps enhance that understanding.

RESOURCES

Once you have set up your ‘note-charts’, work methodically through resources in the following order:
