Event Overview

The Recycled Fashion Show is an educational event sponsored by River Bend Station thatis intended to inspire others to preserve and protect the environment by rethinking recycling. Individual or teams will create clothing from recycled materials in a runway style fashion show.

WHO MAY ENTER: Anyone! There will be a limit on the number of entries in the show this year and spots will be reserved on a first come first serve basis.

COST OF ENTRY: FREE!

DIVISIONS: Fashion show contestants shall be judged in the following divisions:

  • preK-1st grade
  • 2nd – 5thgrade
  • Middle School
  • High School
  • Adult
  • Family Team

INDIVIDUAL or TEAM ENTRY:

  1. Individual entries mean that the person wearing the outfit is also the designer of the outfit.
  2. Team entries (for everything other than a family team) involve one model and up to three members that design and create the artwork. Only the model in the team entry will walk down the runway.
  3. Family teams allow for parents and children to work on outfits together and each member of the family is a model. All family team members walk down the runway together.

2014 FASHION SHOW THEME: This year’s theme for the recycled fashion show is “A Recycled Night at the Movies”. You are encouraged to create your piece using a movieas inspiration.

COSTUME SPECIFICATIONS: All Recycling Show entries must contain recyclable or reusedmaterials, which include cardboard, steel/tin, aluminum, plastics, paper cartons, chipboard,newspaper, mixed papers (magazines, junk mail, and catalogs), and paper bags.

JUDGING CATEGORIES:

All contestants will be judged according to the following areas:

Use of Recyclable Materials, Creativity, Originality, Craftsmanship, and Use of Theme in Design

PRIZES:

A $50 cash prize will be awarded to the bestindividual or team entry in each fashion division.

Recycled Fashion Show Rules

RECYCLING FASHION SHOW CRITERIA FOR CONSTRUCTION IS AS FOLLOWS:

Materials used in the construction of garments MUST be post-consumer, post-industrial, or post agricultural waste. Designers may use materials for construction such as glue, tape, dyes, marker, staples, thread, zippers, elastic, wire, string, Velcro, boning, buckram, grommets, laces, starch, paint, etc. Recycled fabric may only be used as a lining that doesn’t show. The usage of new material should not overpower your total garment. Footwear made from recyclable material is preferred; however’ street shoes are acceptable. Shoes must be safe to walk in. Garments must be constructed well enough to fit the model and hold together for the stage show. (Models are strongly encouraged to wear comfortable cloths beneath recycled garment). You can wear your garment or have someone else you choose wear it. Originality and creativity are encouraged. Recycled fashions must be made of at least 75% recycled or reusedmaterials that otherwise would be thrown away or recycled.

WHAT WILL FASHION ENTRANTS BE JUDGED ON? We will be looking for garments and outfits that fit well and are appropriate for the member's age; that the choice of color, texture and style and accessories go together. 75% of the finished garment must have beenreconstructed (i.e. sewing trim on old garment without changing its basic structure is not considered recycling.)

RULES OF SUBMISSION
Submissions must be original and must be the work of the submitting Applicant. Applicants should keep in mind the fashion show will be held inside a school and children will be present. Fashions that are offensive, obscene or too revealing will not be allowed on the runway.

ARTWORK CONSIDERATIONS
The outfit must allow the model to walk down the center aisle of the auditorium. Models can dress at the school instead of attempting to travel in a car in their outfit. We encourage you to create fashions that are fun, creative and functional for normal activities. Be prepared for your designs to be repairable at the show in an emergency situation.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Please make sure that materials used in pieces are safe to yourself and the public.

JUDGING
Entries will be judged by a panel of judges based on the following criteria: Use of Recyclable Materials, Creativity, Originality, Craftsmanship, and Use of Theme in Design. Prizes will be awarded as designated by judges. All judges’ decisions are final and not subject to change.

Ideas to Help You Get Started

Material Suggestions:

Consider how these items can be cut, folded, molded, knotted, shredded,stitched, woven or reconstructed to make an outfit or specific sections within the design.

  • Scraps of textiles or tiles
  • Recyclables – paper, plastics, aluminum, steel, cardboard, magazines, books, phone books, etc.
  • Beverage bottle caps or six-pack rings
  • Burlap or plastic bags
  • Old toys or game pieces
  • Packaging materials
  • Found outdoor objects – pinecones, sticks, etc.
  • Food containers (clean)
  • Anything found from the garbage or recycling bin

Ideas for Finding Materials:

These are some starter ideas, but the possibilities are endless!

  • Ask friends/neighbors to collect materials such as plastic grocery bags for you
  • Shrink wrap – any grocery or department store
  • Any manufacturing industry, business or corporation
  • Canvas scraps – canvas bag industry
  • Misc. fabrics – garment industry, upholstery shops, interior designers,carpet samples, etc.
  • Burlap bags – coffee roasters
  • Silver plastic coffee bags – Coffee Shops
  • Recycled materials – your local recycling center
  • Closets

Means to Attach Materials

Try to use environmentally-friendly glues, dyes, paints, resins, etc. and bemindful of the weight of materials being used in the finished product.

  • Hot glue gun or crazy glue
  • Machine or hand sewing
  • Packing or duct tape
  • Safety pins or staples
  • Weaving, braiding, lacing, crocheting or knitting materials
  • Paper clips or rubber bands
  • Natural adhesives – rice, flour with water mixture or milk/vinegar/bakingsoda mixture
