Honors Discrete Fall 2013: Chapter One Voting Project

Directions:Students may work individually or with a partner for this project. Students will to take an election on something of interest and figure out the winner using methods learned in Chapter One about voting and also rank all the candidates. Additionally, students must then submit a short paper describing their choice of voting and ranking methods, and other information about their election.

DEADLINES to PROJECT COMPLETION:

Late Penalty of 5 points will be deducted for EACH missed deadline

  • Election Question Approval Deadline: TUESDAY September 3, 2013 in class
  • Ballot Collection Deadline: FRIDAY September 6, 2013 in class
  • Final Project Deadline: FRIDAY September 13, 2013 in class

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Election question MUST BE APPROVED by Mr. Smith.
  • Elections must involve at least4 candidates(answer options) to your question.
  • BALLOTS:Students must have AT LEAST 20 ballots (individual) or AT LEAST 50 ballots (partners)
  • VOTING METHODS: You must use any two voting methods (Plurality, Borda Count, Plurality with Elimination, or Pairwise Comparison) from chapter one to determine a winner of your election.
  • RANKING METHODS: You must use one extended and one recursive ranking method to determine 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc place rankings of your election.
  • ***Ranking methods must be DIFFERENT than your voting methods.***
  • The following can be NEATLY HAND-WRITTEN or TYPED, and submitted with student paper:
  • Preference Schedule
  • Accurate Calculation of Winner and Rankings
  • STUDENT PAPER: Must be 1 page minimum. Double Spaced. Size 12 font at the maximum.
  • Answer the following questions in the student paper:
  • What is your election question? Why?
  • Why did you choose certain methods for voting and ranking?
  • What types of people did you get to vote in this election? (teachers, parents, students, friends, …)
  • How did you collect your data?
  • What did you expect the results of the election to be?
  • Based on your results,
  • Are there any observations (interesting or obvious) that you can make?
  • Would you expect different results if you asked a different group of people? Why?
  • If you work with a partner, you must describe how work was split up and give your partner a grade for their participation and cooperation!!!

BONUS: 10 POINTS if you find all recursive rankings for Plurality, Plurality with Elimination, Borda Count, and Pairwise Comparison methods.

A grading rubric will be posted on the class website.
