Gonorrhea Treatment Information Sheet
Important Information About Your Health
Your sex partner has been treated for Gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted disease (STD)that you can get from having oral, vaginal or anal sex with a person who has a Gonorrheainfection.
Gonorrhea infection is easily treated withthe medicinesCefixime400mg (one pill) AND Azithromycin 1gm (4 pills) at the same time by mouth
Your sex partner has given you bothAzithromycin (pills) and Cefixime (pills) or a prescription for both azithromycin and Cefixime. This medicine orprescription was given to your sex partner by a doctor or other medical provider to treat YOU.
It is very important for you to see your own doctor or medical provider as soon as possible. If you cannot be seen in the next several days, you should take the pills that were given to you, or have the prescription that was given to you filled at your local pharmacy.
It is very important to see a doctor or medical provider as soon as possible to getexamined and tested for Gonorrhea and other STDs. People can have more than one STD at the sametime. This medicine will not cure other STDs. Having STDs can increase your risk of gettinghuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV). You may also want to get a test for HIV.
SYMPTOMS OF GONORRHEA
ALL – Most people DO NOT experience or notice any signs or symptoms at all.
MEN – may notice a discharge (drip) from the penis, pain or discomfort while urinatingor pain or swelling in their testicles
WOMEN – may notice an unusual vaginal discharge, or pain or burning when urinating,pain during sex, bleeding between periods or after sex, lowerbelly, pain or cramps.
BEFORE TAKING THE MEDICINE, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
DO NOT TAKE Azithromycin or Cefixime it if any of the following aretrue:
- You are female and have lower belly pain, pain during sex, vomiting or fever.
- You are male and have pain or swelling in the testicles or fever.
- You have had an allergic reaction aftertaking Azithromycin or Cefixime. If you do have allergies toantibiotics, you should be seen by your medical provider before taking thismedicine.
- You have a serious long-term illness, such as kidney, heart or liver disease.
- If you are currently taking another prescription medication, including medicine
for diabetes, consult your pharmacist before taking the medication
WARNINGS
You can get very sick if you don’t get treated. Without treatment, Gonorrhea can cause severe damage to sex organs for both females and males. Women can become infertile (unable to have children) if they don’t get treated.
DIRECTIONS FOR TAKING AZITHROMYCIN
•DO take all the pills given to you at the same time by mouth. You need to take all of the medicine you were given tobe cured.
•DO NOT take antacids (such as Tums, Rolaids, or Maalox) for one hour before or two hoursafter taking the azithromycin pills.
•DO NOT give this medicine to others. It is intended for sex partners of persons who have
•If you are pregnant, it is safe to take the azithromycin. Be sure to see your doctor for a full check-up. Tell the doctor you may be pregnant, that you have been exposed to Gonorrhea and that you have taken this medicine.
ALLERGIC REACTION AND SIDE EFFECTS OF AZYTHROMYCIN or cefixme
Allergic Reactions:These reactions are very rare but may include:
• Problems breathing and/or tightness in the chest
• Closing of the throat
• Swelling of lips or tongue
• Hives (itchy bumps on skin)
If you experience any of these allergic reactions call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately! / Side Effects:
Most people have no side effects, but some may have:
• A slightly upset stomach
• Diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Vaginal yeast infection
These side effects are usually not serious.
NEXT STEPS
DO NOT have sex for the next 7days after taking the medicine. It takes 7 days for the medicine to work in your body and cure the Gonorrhea infection.
People who get Gonorrhea once can get it again. It is a good idea to get tested for all STDs 3months from now to be sure you did not get another STD.
