MassHockeyState Playdowns –Coaches’ Checklist
1)If you are the home team, secure the ice from the KPW Ice Coordinator.
2)Notify the opposing team and get agreement to play on that date, time, and location. (Sometimes it is helpful to call the opposing team first, before securing ice, to get an idea of dates and times that will or will not work for them. Geography and time of day can present major logistical challenges.)
3)Notifythe referee-in-chief (it is recommended that you copy the Playdown Coordinator as well when you arrange for referees). These individuals will be identified in the District 3 handout provided at the Coach’s meeting. Allow a minimum of 5 days in advance of the game date to notify the referee-in-chief and Playdown Coordinator.
4)Contact rink ASAP-- ask them to provide an EXPERIENCED timekeeper. They usually come up with one, but if not, you will need to find one. If possible, it's also good to confirm it directly with the person who the rink has selected -- don't rely on the rink to call them. (Note: historically both Iorio Arena and Franklin Arena are very good with this.)
5)Also ask the rink manager if they canallow us to take afull hour for the game. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t. For example, Midgets: Because this game is often late, and is followed only bya Senior League, they may say o.k.Usually the guysthat follow on the ice don't mind a 10-minute wait. MassHockey prefers a full 1-hour game if possible.
6)If this is a HOME game, contact KPWYH Ice Coordinator to find out how much our ice time costs. At the game, you will need to charge the opposing team half of this cost. Usually this is paid in the form of a check payable directly to KPWYH. You will then need to forward the check to our Treasurer.
7)When all of the above is complete, reconfirm the date and time and ice cost with the opposing Head Coach. At this time, KPW Head Coach should also check with the opposing coach regarding jersey colors (white pinney or blue jersey).
8)At the game, the Head Coach or Team Manager will need to handle money as follows:
- Collect:
- Half the cost of the ice time -- from opposing team if it's our home game
- Half the cost of the referees plus timekeeper -- from his own team
- Pay (Bring CASH):
- Half the cost of the referees plus timekeeper -- to the MassHockey Coordinator. (He then pays the refs and timekeeper -- we don't pay them directly. Must be CASH.)
(Note:For away games only, we also collect from our team, then pay to the opposing team, half the cost of the opposing team's ice time. Can pay by check.)
9)Most important: At the game, both Head Coaches must present to the District Coordinator his copy of the STAMPED and SIGNEDUSA Hockey roster.
10)Last but not least, READ THE RULES IN ADVANCE OF THE GAME -- especially time and penalty changes!
