Digital Electronics

Course Outline

Text:

No text is required. This is a "project" based course. Theory will be taught to support the projects and also learned through on-line sources as we need them.

Teacher:

Mr. Angel Ortiz

Course Overview:

Digital electronics is the foundation of all modern electronic devices such as cellular phones, MP3 players, computers, digital cameras, HD television, etc. This course focuses on the study of digital electronic theories, circuits, and devices that are used to process and control digital signals to do work for us. You the student will be exposed to basic electrical and electronic theories and basic circuit design and construction, soldering, digital electronic theories, the design process of combinational and sequential logic circuits and devices, programmable logic devices, project development, engineering standards and documentation, teamwork, and communication. This course is a product of Project Lead The Way, inc., and is a foundation course in the Project Lead The Way® high school pre-engineering program.

Grades

Personal Points: 15%, Quizzes/Tests: 15%, Project Tasks: 40%, Engineering Notebook: 30%.

Grades are based on a point system as reflected by the scale: A = 90 – 100%, B = 80 – 89%, C = 70 -79%, D = 55 – 69%, F = 54% or below.

Learning in this class is developmental, with one skill building on the next. It is necessary for you to come to every class and keep up with your work. There may be occasions when you have to spend extra time on an assignment to fully grasp it.

Classroom Behavior

I require each student to be accountable for ALL his/ her own actions. Students must be attentive, focused, and on task.

Classroom Rules

1. Students are to enter the classroom calmly and quietly and go immediately to their assigned seats. Students are to show respect at all times and in all manners toward themselves, others, and staff. This includes all verbal and non-verbal forms of communication including body language, facial expression and tone of voice.

2. Students are to be on task AT ALL TIMES and work to the best of their ability. This means you are to be working on whatever assignment is given and keep good posture. If you are finished an assignment early, you may read or sit quietly and wait for others. There is no talking in my class except to address the academic issue at hand or during assigned group work.

3. There is absolutely no gum, food, drink, candy, electronic devices or any other distraction allowed in my class. Any of these visible will be immediately confiscated and picked up after class. Do not even give the appearance of chewing or it will be deemed that you are doing so. Class time is for learning.

4. Students are to be in their seats when the bell rings. If you are not in your seat working on the computer when the bell rings you are marked tardy.

5. Students are to be prepared to think and learn. Never bother me about sharpening your pencil, needing paper, throwing out trash, or any other trivial matter during class. Class time is for learning.

6. You are never to leave your seat without receiving permission. You are to raise your hand to get permission to speak. Raising your hand does not give you permission to speak; it just lets me know you want to speak. Keep all trash with you until the bell rings and throw it out on your way out of the classroom.

7. If you need to use the restroom you may do so but must make up the time for up to ten minutes after class.

8. I do not argue with students. If you are told to move your seat or given any other direction you are to do so immediately and without complaint. If you feel this or any other direction is unreasonable you may arrange to discuss it with your counselor or arrange a parent conference on your own time. Otherwise, follow all directions immediately and without complaining. Class time is for learning.

9. When the bell rings, you are to remain in your seat until dismissed (DO NOT LINE UP BY THE DOORS). You are responsible to clean any trash in your area whether it is yours or not. Also, push your chair in under your workstation before you exit.

10. I do not give warnings. This is your warning. Any violation of these rules will be met immediately with a 10 minute detention to be served immediately after class and/or other consequences such as copying the rules, cleaning desks (keyboards & screens), parent conference, meeting with the Dean or expulsion from school. If you do not stay for detention, you will be suspended from class and unable to re-enter or get credit for schoolwork until you do come to detention. Suspension does not absolve you of detention. No matter what other consequence you receive, you will have to make up the 10 minute detention before re-entering class.

Students please take the “Rules and Procedures Quiz” linked in your homework assignment section to show me that you read and understand this stuff.
