Watch the following video on advertising and to learn about how consumers are persuaded. Access the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpTb2RjbMn4 for definitions of rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, pathos) and how these appeals appear in advertising. The video length is approximately six (6) minutes long.
Please complete the following questions after viewing the video.
1. What is ethos?
2. What is pathos?
3. What is logos?
4. How does a celebrity endorsement bring credibility to a product?
5. What emotion is evoked in the Cheerios commercial?
6. Does logos require the use of statistical data?
7. Can two different appeals be used in one advertisement? Explain why.
**For our in-class activity, print the “Ethos, Pathos, & Logos Commercial Table” and bring to class.
In-Class Activity: Date ______
Watch commercials and view printed advertisements. Identify the rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) used, in addition to the evidence supporting the identification.
Homework: Date Due______
Research two more advertisements on your own. One must be print and the other can be a video. Complete the table addressing these advertisements. This is due at the beginning of class.
Pre-Work for Day Two of class activities:
· Access the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAsxyffBqm0 and take notes in your own words. The length of the video is 5:45 minutes.
· Access the link http://courses.durhamtech.edu/perkins/aris.html and take notes in your own words.
· Take notes on the information presented. This is a little more in-depth than the first activity. Be prepared to be able to identify the rhetorical appeals used in persuasive writing.
For in-class activity, print the “Ethos, Pathos & Logos Statements” worksheet.
In-Class Activity: Day Two______

Section A: With teacher guidance, identify the rhetorical appeal used in the statements.
Section B: With teacher guidance, identify the best rhetorical appeal to use for the topics listed.
In-Class Activity: Day Three______
Read a passage and determine the rhetorical appeals being used, and then respond to a prompt using an effective rhetorical appeal.
