EDUCATIONAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY (R1)

1.  GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

A.  Gian knowledge in the preoperative, operative, and postoperative care of orthopedic patients in the hospital ,emergency room, and clinic.

B.  Learn the gross anatomical structures of the skeletal system and their individual functions

C.  Provide basic care for acute trauma to the musculoskeletal system in a variety of settings

D.  Become familiar orthopedic journals and other sources of medical and surgical information related to orthopedic disorders

E.  Be able to effectively assist the orthopedic surgeon

F.  Be able to identify and describe gross and radiological characteristics of the histological and pathological conditions of the musculoskeletal system

G.  Be able to use CT scan, MRI, radionuclide, and plain radiographs

H.  Develop the following clinical skills:

a.  physical examination of a closed extremity fracture

b.  splinting of a closed extremity fracture

c.  application of traction to extremities

d.  debride and irrigate an open extremity fracture

e.  perform closed reduction of extremities

f.  apply casts to extremity fractures

g.  joint aspiration

h.  closed reduction of shoulder dislocations

i.  immobilization of the cervical spine

j.  arthroscopy

k.  assist in rehabilitation of postoperative patients

2.  CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

A.  Monitor daily progress of all patents on the service

B.  Document daily progress in the patient’s chart with progress notes. Add appropriate documentation if notes are written by a medical student.

C.  Inform the orthopedic resident and attending surgeon of any and all changes in patient status.

D.  Supervise medical students on daily floor activities

E.  Report to the orthopedic resident, attending surgeons, and Chief of Orthopedic Surgery

F.  Round twice daily with the orthopedic resident and attending surgeons

G.  Attend all outpatient clinics. Document clinic experience by signing the patient log and returning a copy to the Education Coordinator

H.  Attend all educational meetings, conferences, and presentations

3.  SUPERVISION

A.  The R1 general surgery resident is under the direct supervision of the orthopedic resident, attending surgeons, and Chief of Orthopedic Surgery. All problems, admissions, and consults are to be discussed with the responsible attending.
