Lesson 1:

OFFICIATING PRINCIPLES / DUTIES

During this session, officials will discuss the various Officiating Principles in the Officials Manual and the importance of Officials Duties that should be demonstrated for all contests.

OFFICIALS MANUAL

Officiating Principles

Ø  Discuss the Code of Conduct and the importance for all officials to demonstrate these very important characteristics

Ø  Discuss the Officiating Philosophy as it pertains to the importance of rules knowledge, language, and the proper use of NFHS signals / mechanics

Ø  Personal Characteristics: Explain the importance of conditioning, decisiveness, teamwork, and maintaining control

Ø  Discuss the importance of proper preparation prevents poor performance (examples incl. rules study, practicing mechanics, attending association meetings, obtaining a schedule and sending back contracts)

Ø  Highlight and discuss Basketball Rules Fundamentals

Ø  Uniform and Equipment: Discuss the uniform / equipment guidelines

Ø  Provide guidance on the different vendors that supply NFHS approved attire

Ø  Discuss the appropriate types of backboards / baskets approved for high schools

Ø  Discuss the proper location and operation of the clock / scoreboard, possession arrow and designated X spot for entering substitutes

Officials and Their Duties

Ø  Discuss responsibilities of Table Officials and when official’s jurisdiction begins

Session 1: Wrap-Up (Administer Quiz / Assign Homework)

Lesson 2:

TECHNOLOGY / TOURNAMENT APPLICATION PROCESS / SOCIAL MEDIA RESPONSIBILITIES

During the session, officials will discuss the technology related to ArbiterSports and the IHSAA Arbiter Hub. Officials will review tutorials produced by the IHSAA to demonstrate the navigation of Arbiter. Also included in this session will be the discussion and tutorials related to the process of working beyond the regular season; into the tournament series. Finally discussed will be the issue related to social media outlets. What is your responsibility as an official?

Lesson 3:

GAME MANAGEMENT / NFHS SIGNALS - MECHANICS

During the session, officials will discuss and illustrate the importance of following Game Procedures as they pertain to court coverage. Officials will discuss and highlight the importance of Pre-Game Conferences with their partners. During this last session, this is a good opportunity to offer additional information about benefits of joining an association and also provide an overview on how to use ArbiterSports portal.

Game Procedures for Two / Three Officials

Ø  Discuss and define Terminology. Illustrate on court diagram or PP deck

Ø  Discuss and explain the Pregame Duties that should be completed by the officiating crew

Ø  Discuss and illustrate on the court diagram the procedures for putting the ball in play, court coverage, foul reporting area and switching procedures on fouls

Ø  Discuss and explain the communication signals / mechanics that should be used by officials during the game

Game Management / Awareness

Ø  Discuss the importance of being professional at all times

Ø  Discuss and explain the importance of communication with administration, coaches, and players

Ø  Discuss the importance of clock management and crew communication

Ø  Discuss and define the importance of preventive game management

Pre-Game Conference

Discuss the importance of conducting a Pre-Game Conference before every contest. Listed below are some of the topics that should be discussed!

Points of Emphasis / Rule Changes - Officials will discuss and go over NFHS Rule Changes and any Points of Emphasis for the current year

NFHS Basketball Signals - Officials will discuss and illustrate the proper use of signals. Participants in class will have the opportunity to practice and receive feedback.

On Court Demonstrations - Officials will have the opportunity to get on the court and demonstrate proper mechanics, calling fouls, switches, and working on proper court coverage.

Session 3: Wrap-Up (Administer Quiz / Assign Homework)

PLAYERS and EQUIPMENT / DEFINTIONS

During the session, officials will outline the details around Players, Substitutes and Equipment. Also officials will discuss and study the Definitions and how they should be applied.

Ø  Explain the process and the importance of having starters listed in the scorebook and possible penalties if not entered correctly

Ø  Highlight the importance of adhering to proper uniform and numbering standards

Ø  Discuss the equipment / apparel that is appropriate and not appropriate based NFHS standards

During the session, officials will discuss the different scenarios associated with Out-of-Bounds / Throw-In situations and Free Throw Administration. Officials will also discuss and study all of the Violations and Penalties and how they will be applied in contests.
