Obligations to the Ministry of Education

Our kura acknowledges its obligations to the Government and the Ministry of Education under legislation and guidelines that include the National Education Goals, National Administration Guidelines and Education Priorities.

Cultural Diversity and Maori Dimension

Our kura reflects Aotearoa, New Zealand’s cultural diversity by:

  • Showing respect for all cultures within our kura and community.
  • Utilising the strengths and skills of all community members.

Te Reo Maori me ona tikanga

  • Maketu School is a bi-lingual school. Our kura provides daily te reo Maori instruction to level 3 in years 2 to 6.
  • Karakia, Te Arawa tikanga me kawa, te reo Maori, kapahaka and waiata are integrated and implemented into every day learning and planning.
  • Bi-lingual signage is displayed in most areas.
  • Developing positive relationships most conducive to learning including whanau and the wider community.
  • Communicating and consulting with kaumatua, kuia, whanau and community where appropriate.
  • Contact with community groups such as the local marae, runanga and hauora are in place.

Our mission statement reflects our whanau and community’s wish that all tamariki attending Maketu School progress and achieve through quality education to enable them to stand confident and proud, contributing as citizens of Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Our kura is 99% Maori and therefore whanaungatanga (relationships), whakaute (respect) me whanongapai (doing your best) are our most highly regarded values amongst all staff and tamariki.

Strategic aim 1:

National Standards are used effectively to support improved

progress and achievement in student outcomes. Students have

ownership of their learning and know what to do to achieve

National Standards.

All tamariki are able to access The New Zealand Curriculum as

substantiated by achievement in relation to National Standards.

Strategic aim 5:

By learning te reo Maori, tamariki will be able to participate with

understanding and confidence in situations where te reo and

tikanga Maori predominate and to integrate language and cultural

understandings into their lives.

Strategic aim 6:

Through the New Zealand Curriculum our kura aims to provide a

learning environment that will equip all tamariki for the 21st century

and their journey to become life-long learners.

Strategic aim 1: National Standards are used effectively to support improved progress and achievement in student
outcomes. Students have ownership of their learning and know what to do to achieve National Standards.
2012 / 2013 / 2014
Refer to annual action plan. / We will ensure students become more involved in their assessment and in particular specific targeted tamariki.
Within two weeks of assessment periods ending, staff will collaboratively work together to analyse their own
and school wide data for reporting to the board and parents about all and specifically targeted tamariki.
Implement professional development with staff and monitor individual needs with a questionnaire.
Review assessment tools and methods to ensure consistency across the kura.
All teachers help tamariki to reflect on the quality of their own work through:
a) regular self-assessment based on criteria
b) self-assessment of work and goals
c) participating in parent conferences
Teachers use student data to regularly reflect on the effectiveness of their own actions. / Hold BOT National Standards session to improve understanding with new BOT members.

Strategic aim 1:

Annual aim 1.1:

Board of trustees, principal and teaching staff have the appropriate knowledge and understanding of the National Standards

to address the low levels of student performance and achievement.

Baseline data:

Analysis of school-wide data in November 2011 identified a significant majority of year 1-6 students who are performing

below National Standard expectations in reading, writing and mathematics.

Targets:

1.1.1: The board, in conjunction with the principal and teaching staff will set targets, planning, programme implementation and assessment methods that ensure all tamariki will be achieveing at or above the National Standards.

Annual aim 2.1:

To increase the number of tamariki achieving at or above the National Standard for reading.

Baseline data:

Analysis of school-wide reading data in November 2011 identified concerns across the school. Assessment

tool results and overall teacher judgements indicated reading comprehension and vocabulary as a particular area of need.

In years 3 to 6 25% of tamariki were below National Standards and 75% of tamariki in years 1 and 2.

Targets:

2.1.1: The identified tamariki below the National Standard in reading will have increased their reading age by at least one

year by the end of 2012.
