ARENA/VIRTUAL SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL MINUTES

November 3, 2011

The meeting was called to order by Ron Roebuck at 11:06 a.m.

IN ATTENDANCE

Elizabeth Diaz, Ron Roebuck, Gene Williams, Janice Hickey, and Lori Mendoza

APPROVAL OF OCTOBER MINUTES

Minutes for the October 6, 2011 meeting were distributed by Lori Mendoza. They were reviewed and a motion to approve the minutes was seconded and unanimously approved.

WASC GOALS FOR 2011-2012

The WASC goal of trying to have Arena meet the A – G requirements was discussed and Mr. Williams and Mr. Roebuck discussed the different programs they have researched. These programs include Acellus, Connections Education, CyberHigh and Plato. More research will be done on the various programs and what they have to offer.

SINGLE PLAN FOR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT – 2011-12

The plan will be submitted to the ESUSD School Board on Tuesday, November 8 for approval. The SSC voted to approve it. Cynthia Pfister voted in absentia via email after the SSC was electronically submitted to her.

INTERNSHIPS

ESHS is getting internships this year through Mrs. Miller and her program. We would like to see if these can be available to the Arena students too. We discussed the need to create an “internship template” made from the students’ expectations so they will understand the skills that are desirable and needed.

FIELDTRIPS

We discussed a fieldtrip for the Arena students to go to Jarrod Dogan’s apparel business, Hybrid Apparel which is located in Cerritos. A date for 1/13/2012 has been set for this fieldtrip. We discussed inviting the parents on this fieldtrip and making it mandatory for the students.

GUEST SPEAKER

There was a guest speaker on Friday, October 28 from El Camino College. It was very informative and the students asked many questions. The guest speaker on Friday, November 4 will be Debbie Axler from Grateful Dogs. This is a company in El Segundo that provides daycare and therapeutic services to dogs.

FUNDING

The funding was discussed for fieldtrips for Arena. Ron Roebuck moved to approve $1500 for fieldtrips for Arena. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

BASKETBALL HOOP

A new basketball hoop was purchased and installed next to the Arena classroom. It is now available for the Arena students to use.

NEW BUSINESS

New business was tabled until the December meeting.
