Jaume Subirana

Jaume Subirana (Barcelona, 1963) writer, has a doctorate in Catalan Philology. He has been an assistant professor at the Pompeu Fabra University (1993-1999) and a visiting professor at Duke University (1996). Also he has been a lecturer in Barcelona for the Global Studies program at Trinity College ( USA ), and a professor with the Open University of Catalonia, where he directed the creation of the Lletra virtual space for Catalan literature (www.uoc.edu/lletra). From September of 2004 is the director of the Institució de les LLetres Catalanes.


He has published poetry, fiction, and essay, and has won awards such as the Carles Riba for poetry or the Ferran Soldevila for biography. He has translated Seamus Heaney, Ray Bradbury, Jay McInerney and Marguerite Duras to Catalan, and has adapted songs by Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers, Sondheim and others for the stage.
Between 1992 and 1997 he and Oriol Esquerre edited the first Catalan cultural magazine on disk (1991 Revista magnètica). With Xavier Berenguer, he co-directed the CDROM Dotze sentits. Poesia catalana d'avui (winner of the Möbius award for the best Spanish art and culture multimedia production, 1996). Later, from Lletra he has promoted various virtual literary spaces. He has edited various poetry anthologies and volumes of writers such as Josep Carner, Gabriel Ferrater or Marià Manent, as well as the manual Literatura catalana contemporània (1999, with G. Bordons). For the Barcelona City Hall, he projected and directed the books Barcelona acròstic (2003, with the collaboration of twenty writers and photographers) and Barcelona 365 (2004, with J. Bernadó, T. Plana and C. Roche).
He has participated in national and international literary festivals. He is a member of the board of the Catalan PEN and habitually collaborates with the media. More information at:
