Hawks and Owls Bring Key Conference Wins Home to Nest

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Owls and the Saint Joseph’s Hawks both won a pair of games last week. Temple opened the week with a 1-0 non-league, non-conference win over city rival Villanova, then earned the program’s first-ever victory over American Athletic Conference opponent Southern Methodist over the weekend with a 1-0 shutout win in Texas. The Hawks topped a pair of Atlantic 10 rivals, defeating Rhode Island at home and George Mason in Virginia to move above .500 at 6-5-1 on the season and a perfect 3-0-0 in A-10 action. La Salle also scored an A-10 victory, also taking care of business against Rhode Island.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Saint Joseph’s Junior Midfielder Matt Crawford (Bensalem, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep)

With the Hawks trailing 1-0 at intermission against Rhode Island last week, Crawford scored the equalizer just three minutes into the second half, then assisted on what would ultimately be the game-winner six minutes later. In the 72nd minute, Crawford added another goal for insurance as the Hawks claimed the win over the Rams. He would add another assist on Derek MacKinnon’s game-winning goal in the 59th minute at George Mason on Saturday.

Temple Senior Forward Jorge Gomez Sanchez (Talavera de la Reina, Spain)

Jorge Gomez Sanchez continued his historic run as the leading scorer in the Soccer Six with a pair of goals – the only goals Temple would need for two wins on the week. First, he scored the game-winner in an intra-city rivalry game against Villanova at home on Tuesday night. Then on Saturday, Gomez Sanchez helped the team to its first-ever victory against SMU, posting the eventual game-winner in the 13th minute. Gomez Sanchez has now tallied 25 career goals and sits seventh all-time in career scoring at Temple. He is one goal shy of tying his own single-season goal record of 13, set last season.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK

Temple Redshirt-Junior Goalkeeper Alex Cagle (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield East)

Alex Cagle takes home the Defender of the Week nod for a second-consecutive week, posting a pair of shutouts and 11 total saves to push the Owls to their sixth and seventh wins of the season, including their first win ever against Southern Methodist. Cagle now has four consecutive shutouts after the wins over Villanova and SMU, a streak that sits one shy of matching the Owls’ all-time record for single-season consecutive clean sheets.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Temple Freshman Midfielder Zach Brown (West Orange, N.J./West Orange)

Zach Brown got his first career start and played the full 90 minutes in Temple’s 1-0 shutout win over Villanova on Tuesday. The freshman then subbed in against the Mustangs and played 38 minutes, helping on the defensive end in both games by controlling the strong Temple midfield as the Owls posted a pair of shutout wins.

HONOR ROLL

Saint Joseph’s Junior Goalkeeper Greg O’Connell

O’Connell made four saves in the full-match effort to pick up his fifth win of the season against Rhode Island last week. Over the weekend, he had a crucial save in the 80th minute to secure the 2-1 win at George Mason, improving the Hawks to 6-5-1 and a perfect 3-0-0 in Atlantic-10 play.

Penn Senior Forward Alec Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North)

The Quakers’ captain played in just one game this week, sitting out Wednesday’s contest against Delaware after accumulating five yellow cards, but picked up right where he left off when he started against Columbia on Saturday. Neumann, who sits behind only Jorge Gomez Sanchez in scoring in the city, notched an equalizer in the second half against Columbia, his seventh on the year to lead the Ivy League. Penn would ultimately fall, 2-1, in Manhattan.
