Phase I

1. Large Group Sessions (Lectures, Workshops, Patient Presentations)

2. Small Group Sessions (Laboratories, Case-based learning, Journal club discussions)

  • As arranged with Block Chairs or Clerkship Directors

3. Clinical Reasoning Facilitators (Small Group Facilitator; Case Development)

  • Work with 7-8 students, guiding them through case-based sessions focused on concepts of clinical reasoning such as problem representation and differential diagnosis.
  • Ten2-hour small group sessions plus 10 hours of preparation time over a 4-month period.

  • Half-day training workshop required for first-time facilitators

4. Doctoring1 (July-Dec; first year students)

  • Communication and Physical Exam Skills: 3.5 hours per week for 16 weeks

5. Doctoring 2 (Jan-May; first year students)

  • Assist students in developing knowledge and skills related to communication, physical exam, medical note writing, and working with diverse populations. In addition to practicing and refining these skills, students will engage in discussions on topics such as end of life care, substance use and misuse, pain, and caring for vulnerable populations, while reflecting on the development of their professional identity as they progress.
  • Clinical Skills, Communication skills, note writing skillsSeminars: 11 sessions, 4 hours per session scheduled over the 16 week semester on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons.

6. Doctoring 4 (July-Dec; second year students)

  • Healer’s Art Seminar: 3 hours X 5 sessions
  • Ethics Seminar: 2 hours X 5 sessions
  • Clinical Skills: 3 hours X 12 sessions

7. Continuity Clinic Preceptor (as part of the Doctoring Curriculum)

  • Student requirement is a minimum of 6 half-day clinic sessions
  • CC 1 (1styear students)- January to April
  • CC 2 (2nd year students)–September to December.

8. Doctoring 3-PIE Circuit Rider (Advising and evaluating students in clinical setting at sites throughout the State of New Mexico)

  • June-July. Time commitment varies based on number of students and location

9. Doctoring 3-PIE Narrative Strand Mentor (Review student reflective writing and provide feedback)

  • June-July. Once per week for 6 weeks.
