Julie Maurer of Soaring Eagle Dairy Wins DBA Advocacy Award

Madison, Wis. (Jan. 14, 2016) – Julie Maurer, co-owner of Soaring Eagle Dairy in Newton, is the 2016 recipient of the Dairy Business Association Advocacy Award.

Maurer, who co-owns Soaring Eagle Dairy with several members of her family, received her award at Dairy Strong 2016: Partners in Progress held at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center.

Founded in 1980 by Maurer’s father, Soaring Eagle Dairy started with 60 cows, but has grown to 1,100 milking cows and 1,850 acres of owned and leased land.

Maurer left the farm to study accounting and worked at the Kohler Co. for 11 years before returning to the family business in 2003. At Soaring Eagle, she is responsible for its 25 employees, milk quality, nutrient management plans and confined animal feeding operation plans. Maurer also used her accounting skills to track monthly farm operation costs and divided the farm into three different enterprises – crops, dairy and heifer raising.

Maurer is a tireless advocate for the dairy community and works to connect with customers as often as possible whether it’s through offering tours at the farm or maintaining an active presence on social media. On Soaring Eagle Dairy’s Facebook page, Maurer shares photos and videos of daily life on the farm. She is also the first board president for the Wisconsin Agricultural Education Center, which will be built in Manitowoc County and provide an engaging experience centered around agricultural education and discovery.

Maurer also works with the local UW Extension office to host training seminars and tours, such as Hispanic dairy worker trainings and dairy cattle feeding seminars. In addition to her involvement with DBA, she is also active in her church, the Kiel FFA Alumni Group, the Land O’Lakes Board and the Heifer Authority, a heifer raising business co-owned with other Wisconsin farmers in Colorado.
