Announcement of webinar on Decommissioning Research for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority
National Nuclear Laboratory on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority will be hosting a webinar sessions ahead of the upcoming PhD Bursary call for 2016. The objective of these sessions will be to allow technical leads from the NWDRF to provide further background of the research themes that will be included in the 2016 call.
The next session will be held on the theme of Decommissioning. This will be held on Wednesday 30th September 2015, 13:00 – 14:00. Please see below.

1)Characterisation & Analysis - The ability to identify “what” is “where” within an enclosed radiological environment enables proportionate POCO and Decommissioning plans to be produced. The ability to take measurements at the workface, within vessels, pipes and a cell will markedly reduce the burden upon existing labs and furthermore eliminates the need for samples, coupons etc.
2)Waste treatment methods - Methods that allow for the segregation of contamination from a substrate can enable the consolidation of contamination into a smaller, yet more active waste form e.g. LLW to very low volume ILW. Such processes need to be cheap to employ and require minimal infrastructure to support it, given a context of a large LLW inventory. The methods should also consider size reduction, dismantling and waste handling.
3)Decontamination - Decontamination methods that avoid the use of chemicals are welcomed. Processes that eliminate liquid effluents are equally welcomed. Hence there is interest in “dry” decontamination processes that avoid the creation of large volumes of aerial effluent to be filtered. Decontamination techniques of alpha contaminated structures have also been identified as an area of interest.
4)Robotics and autonomous systems - Robotic and autonomous systems for entry into difficult to access and or/contaminated environments to perform inspection, characterisation and to carry out decommissioning activities. This may include size reduction, dismantling, waste segregation, general waste handling and assessed man entry.
