Turning a Research Paper Into a Speech

You will be taking your formal 3rd person research paper and turning it into an energetic, attention grabbing speech

Requirements:

·  Length-- 3-4 minutes (You must make 2:55 or not exceed 4:15)

A. You will receive 10 points for your time

B. If you do not meet your time or exceed your time, you will lose 10 points

C. You will lose an additional 2 points for every 5 seconds you are over or under your

time

D. Mrs. Orr will be monitoring and recording your time and holding up time cards

1. Time Cards will indicate when you have reached 1:00, 1:30, 2:00, and 2:30

E. You CANNOT USE YOUR PHONES AS TIMERS OR ANY TYPE OF TIME

·  Typed Outline-- Topical or Full Sentence; Must include intro, transitions, & conclusion

A. You will now take your research paper outline and turn it in to a speech outline

1. Make sure you have a strong attention grabber for your speech

2. You may use you in speeches to draw the audience into your topic

3. Remember: this is a persuasive paper, so I will be looking or hearing for you

proving your argument and using a persuasive tone

4. You may choose to complete a full sentence outline or a topical outline

5. Mrs. Stonitsch will be following your outline.

6. You want your speech to cover the intro and conclusion pretty accurately, and

you need to follow your outline—YOU NEED TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH

YOUR SPEECH SO THAT IT COMES SECOND NATURE TO YOU, NOT

MEMORIZED LIKE A ROBOT THAT IF YOU FORGET ONE WORD, YOU

WILL FREEZE

·  Note Cards-- 1-2 3x5 or 4x6 only cards with only bullet points of major points and

quotes only

1. You will turn in your note cards at the end of your speech

2. They will be stapled to your rubric and outline

3. Use these cards as a guide to trigger your memory to help you with your speech

4. You are NOT TO COPY AND PASTE OR TYPE ON THESE CARDS

5. ONLY HAND WRITTEN SHORT NOTES UNLESS USING QUOTES

6. You will lose points if you fidget with your cards and look to long at the cards or

look like a bobble head when looking at the cards and trying to look at the

audience

7. You will receive 2 bonus points for not using note cards, but this is only an

option because note cards can be very helpful if used accurately

·  Visual Aid-- Can be a video clip, power point, glogster, or poster board

1. Video clips of music, an interview, etc. can only be a clip of no more than 1 min.

2. Poster boards must be incorporated into your speech—I will explain

A. Must be either a half or large size poster board. NOTHING SMALLER

B. Must be visible from the back of the room

C. Must include pictures and words large enough to see in the back

D. Must be colored, neat, and decorative

E. 1-2 extra credit points has been given before when a poster is just out of

this world

3. If using video, it needs to be incorporated into your speech as an opening or in

the middle of your speech; HOWEVER, ALL VIDEO CLIPS CANNOT BE A

PART OF YOUR TIME. MRS. ORR WILL STOP THE TIME WHEN YOU

START CLIP AND RESTART IT WHEN YOU STOP CLIP AND RESUME

SPEECH

·  Body Language and Eye Contact—

1. You will not be given a podium.

2. You will stand in front of the room.

3. You can move around naturally by walking or even talking with your hands

4. You need to be enthusiastic—not stiff or you will lose points

5. Maintain eye contact with the audience for the majority of the time

6. NO GUM OR ANYTHING IN YOUR MOUTH—You will lose points

·  Optional Attire for Extra Credit—Up to 5 pts

1. You may dress up as an inductee

A. You can only do this if your inductee has a distinct style

a. This means not just a shirt, a headband, and ratty jeans

b. You have to come out of your comfort zone and dress up like you

are doing it for a Halloween Contest

2. You can dress up like you are going to interview at Harvard or Yale or in your

Sunday’s Best clothing

A. Males

1. Suit with tie, long-sleeved button up tucked in, slacks, and dress

Shoes—Jacket is optional

B. Females

1. Nice dress with nice shoes

2. Nice slacks with nice top and shoes

3. Formal skirt (like a pencil skirt), blouse, and dressy shoes

2. No flip flops or casual sandals

3. No short skirts or dresses that would be deemed inappropriate

4. No sleeveless tops or dresses—Must wear jacket or sweater

5. No flashy jewelry

6. No jean jackets

·  Those who VOLUNTEERED to go on Monday will also receive 5 pts

Due Dates:

1. Visual Aid due for ALL STUDENTS on Friday, May 16

2. Typed, formulated for a speech outline due for ALL STUDENTS on Monday, May 19

3. Speeches will be May 19-23 based on your assigned date

Visual Aids for ALL STUDENTS due Friday, May 16, 2014

1. If you have an electronic visual aid, you must email it to me before class or come

it with saved on a flash drive to upload to your class folder on teacher’s

computer

2. If it is a Youtube clip, you must have the link written down or saved on

flashdrive to upload onto my computer or you must email me the link

3. If doing a creative poster board, they must be turned in by Friday with your

name on the back with class period

·  Requirements during speech week

1. You must be dressed up before coming to class—do that on your own time

2. You must be ready to go when your name is called

3. You need to come up with note cards and visual aid

4. If you have uploaded your visual aid to a file on my flash drive, then you need to

pull it up as soon as class begins or get in before the tardy bell rings to open it

IF YOU ARE NOT PRESENTING, YOU WILL DO THE FOLLOWING:

1. Each student will be required to feel out a constructive critique for each speaker

A. You will be given a form to fill out and turn in for each student per day

B. You will provide 2 positive comments and 2 critiques to help each

speaker improve next year

C. You will be given a grade for each critique you accurately complete for

each grade—Classes will very from 28-33 pts for this assignment

D. If you are a presenter that day, you only have to constructively critique

the other speakers for that day
