Revised 9/06

SEPULVEDA MIDDLE SCHOOL

PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE POLICY

  1. For school wide discipline to work effectively, it is important that we reduce the number of referrals sent to the Dean’s Office. This will allow students with severe behavior problems to be dealt with appropriately. For this reason, our discipline policy has been revised to reflect the following:

Class Behavior Problems:

The teacher will discipline students on the classroom for the following:

  • No materials
  • Chewing gum
  • Talking
  • Out of seat
  • P.E. non-dress
  • Excessive absences/tardies
  • Rude or inappropriate comments, behavior
  1. If any of the above continues, the teacher will:
  • Contact parents and request a conference
  • Follow intradepartmental referral policy
  • Follow paper pick-up policy
  • Follow tardy policy
  • Suspend student for one class period (teacher initiates paperwork, and notifies the parent/guardian)
  1. The teacher will refer a student to their counselor for the following: (Once a student is referred out of class, the counselor will make decisions regarding disciplinary action taken.)
  • Continued infractions of classroom rules.
  1. The Dean will handle the following types of infractions of school or District Policy:
  • Possession of weapons
  • Possession/use of drugs
  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • Extortion
  • Major infractions or disregard for school policy
  • Gang activities
  • Fights
  • Direct defiance
  • Overt, unacceptable behavior (Profanity, verbal abuse, disrespect)
  • Hate/Bias motivated crimes (assistance from assistant principal)
  • Sexual Harassment (assistance from assistant principal)
  1. Truancy – send to Admissions Office (send referral only, not the student)
  1. Non-uniforms – send to the Dean’s Office

Intradepartmental referral: Referral is filled out and student is sent to another teacher within the sending teacher’s department.

Students who are referred to the Dean’s Office should ALWAYS be sent with an assignment and a completed referral, (listing all previous actions taken by teacher).
