The P.E.O. Chapter AF Scholarship

P.E.O. is an international organization that promotes women’s education. At the local level, Chapter AF provides an $800 scholarship each year to a high school graduating female senior.Additionally, the recipient will be granted $100 in her sophomore, junior, and senior college years.

This scholarship is in memory of Lois RawelsGwartney. She was born in Boise, Idaho in 1912 and attended Boise High School, University of Idaho, and finished at the College of Idaho in Caldwell.Lois was an English and journalism teacher at Salmon High School for nearly 30 years. She was also the advisor for both the annual and the school newspaper for several years. During that time, the school won several awards.Lois was a long time member of the Salmon P.E.O. chapter and held many offices. When she died in 1991, she left money to be used for our local scholarship, which we give each spring to a deserving senior girl. That original money is now gone, but because of Lois’s love of the sisterhood and her devotion to education, this continuing scholarship is given in her memory.
