Greenmount Scout Group was started by Christine T (now GSL) on 4 October 1965 with 12 Wolf Cubs. At 31 January 2005 the Group consisted of:

  • 3 Beaver Colonies - 29 Beavers
  • 2 Cub Packs - 53 Cubs
  • 1 Scout Troop - 37 Scouts
  • 119 Children spread across the Group
  • 38 Leaders and Instructors with average length of service exceeding 10 years

To celebrate the Group's success,in early 2004, Richard (Scout Leader) suggested to the other Group Leaders, instead of having the annual Group event run by the Fellowship on a Friday evening in July, they should organise a full day event as part of a Group Camp to celebrate the Group's 40th birthday. With the Section Leaders to plan and run the Camp, the Fellowshipwent hard to work to devise a theme and programme that all Group members would enjoy.

All Leaders and Fellowship members worked towards the camp date in early July. To make the weekend more enjoyable for the boys, some of the Leaders and Fellowship spent the day on Friday erecting all the tents needed for the weekend. Fortunately, we didn't need to erect the massive marquee we'd booked as it had been used the previous week and had been left up - the marquee was to prove a god-send over the weekend providing shade from the baking sun.

Over the weekend of the 8th to 10th July, more than 90 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers descended on Bowley Campsite for the Group's first "Group Camp". The Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and Fellowship camped both nights, with the Cubs camping on the Saturday night, the Beavers and one of their parents stopped for the day on Saturday.

The theme of the event on Saturday was "Red Indian Tribes" in tribute of the first 12 Wolf Cubs who met in groups of six named after various Indian tribes.

The Saturday morning started with a flag-break with Graham L (now DC) breaking the flag as a representative of the first Wolf Cubs in 1965.

In the scorching weather, the boys were dividend into groups and given the task of building an Indian village with a wigwam, gateway and totem pole and to dress their leader as Chief complete with head dress.

Lunch was spent in the little shade available on the field before making bread twists on a fire each team had built. A quick game of football for each Sectionbefore the afternoon activities.

The afternoon was spent with members from each Section taking part in different activities - the Beavers going on a Bear Hunt, the Cubs, Scouts and Explorers navigating the campsite using compass bearing and completing first aid incidents.

The evening meal was a barbecue before Father John Seddon (National Chaplain to the Scout Association) led the Scout's Own/Reflection.

To round off the day, all on camp took part in a mass campfire led by Brenda, Chris and Dave. Once the Beaver's left, the campfire continued before all the Cubs and Scouts went to bed very tired.

Sunday morning was spent with the Cubs, Scouts and Explorers taking part in a round robin of different sports.

The camp finished at lunchtime with everyone who took part having great fun and hopefully good memories from the Group's first "Group Camp" in 40 years!

The camp wouldn't have been possible or the success it was, without the hard work and support of all Leaders and Fellowship members in particularspecial thanks to - Richard, Mike W, Frank, Christine and Jacqui. A massive thanks!!!!!

Design of the winning badge by Harry K (Beaver when the result was drawn) to be worn by all members attending the Anniversary Camp in July 2005.
