ASSOCIATE VICE CHANCELLOR / CHIEF SUSAN RISELING

Brief Bio

Associate Vice Chancellor/Chief Riseling currently leads the Police Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to her appointment in 1991, she served as Assistant Chief and Deputy Chief at the State University of New York-Stony Brook Police Department. AVC/Chief Riseling began her career at the University of Maryland-College Park as the manager of Security for Residence Life. She attended the University of Maryland for both her undergraduate and graduate work.

At the University of Wisconsin, AVC/Chief Riseling has woven problem solving policing with community-oriented policing to form an effective approach in dealing with University safety and crime issues. AVC/Chief Riseling is considered an expert in date and acquaintance rape, and was featured on national television during the Kennedy-Smith rape trial. Throughout the 1990’s she developed prevention strategies for work place violence and has taught threat assessment, investigation and prevention of work place violence incidents.

In October of 2005, she was elected to IACP Vice President at Large. The IACP is the world’s largest police organization with over 20,000 members from over 100 countries.

As Vice President she has oversight responsibilities for the Terrorism, the Organized Crime, the Patrol and Tactical Operations, Civilian/Military Police Relationship and the Police Research Committees. AVC/Chief Riseling served as the General Chair of the College and University Police Section of the International Association of Chiefs of Police for 6 years. AVC/Chief Riseling has also served on the Executive Committee of the IACP for 11 years, Civil Rights Committee for 10 years, Patrol and Tactical Operations for 9 years, Homeland Security Committee for 7 years, Terrorism Committee for 2 years, and Research Advisory Committee for 2 years..

Chief Riseling is a past President of the Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association and the first woman and first University Police Chief to hold the position. She is a past President of the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives. In August 2003, Chief Riseling was awarded the Motorola NAWLEE (National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives) Law Enforcement Executive of the year. Also in August 2003 Chief Riseling was promoted to Associate Vice Chancellor for the University of Wisconsin.
