1.Applicants must be enrolled in the Ph.D. program at LSUHSC-S and their dissertation proposal must be approved by their research advisory committee prior to submission of this application.

2.The Ike Muslow Predoctoral Fellowship award is intended for students not working in either cardiovascular or cancer projects.

3.Initial duration of support is for one year. Up to two renewal applications (each of one year duration) will be considered for a maximum duration of support of three years.

4. New applications (limited to 10 pages) will contain the following sections: specific aims, background/significance, research design/methods. The application should also include biosketches for the applicant (student) and the sponsor (major research advisor), a copy of the student's most recent transcript, the signed dissertation committee document approving the student's research proposal, and a letter of support from the sponsor.

5. A letter of support from the student's major research advisor (sponsor) should clarify the role that the applicant played in the development of the proposal and the relationship of the proposed project to ongoing research in the sponsor's laboratory. The advisor should also provide a detailed mentoring plan consisting of the following sections:

1. Mentoring experience. Include information about your previous experience in training junior scientists. This experience could include your activities while you were a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow or an independent investigator. If possible, provide concrete examples of your successful mentoring experiences.

2. Mentoring plan. Provide a comprehensive mentoring plan that details how you will facilitate the development of the student. Include information about the potential impact of the proposed plan and how the plan will be tailored to the specific background, ability, and career goals of the student. The narrative should include how often you plan to meet with the student and the format of those meetings. Also include plans for the student’s training outside of the LSUHSC campus, such as conferences, workshops, and training with lab collaborators.

3. Environment. Describe your overall scientific environment and how this environment will contribute to the probability of success for the student. How does the proposed mentoring plan benefit from unique features within your scientific environment?

The entire support letter should not exceed three single spaced pages.

6.If an initial original application is unsuccessful, applicants may submit one revision of that application. Revised applications must include a clearly marked introduction (limited to one page) indicating the changes that have been made in response to the reviewers' critiques. Applications that do not include such an introduction will be returned to the applicant without consideration.

7.Renewal applications (following support of an initial application) must comply with the expectations and format outlined in the Predoctoral Fellowship Award PROGRESS REPORT FORM.

8.A completed and signed Intramural Routing Sheet (Lite Green Sheet) for Intramural Applications must be submitted with the application. The Intramural Routing Sheet form is located on Office of Sponsored Programs website:

9.Scan and include the completed and signed Intramural Routing Sheet (Lite Green Sheet) with the intramural application. The completed intramural application package will be emailed in PDF format to the Office for Sponsored Programs () by 5 PM on March 23, 2018.

NOTE: OSPTT is no longer requiring the original signature documents (Intramural Routing Sheet and application signature page) be delivered prior to grant submission. These signed documents must be included in the scanned application package. Applications submitted without these documents and/or signatures will be rejected for submission.

Funding level: $28,000

Objective:Provide stipend support for senior graduate students

Eligibility:Ph.D. students whose dissertation proposals have been approved by their doctoral advisory committee are eligible.

Application:NIH R01 application format should be used for the initial application. Total pages (single spaced) of research plan cannot exceed 10 pages.Provide at least one-half inch margins (top, bottom, left and right) for all pages. No applicant-supplied information can appear in the margins. An additional 2 pages may be included for literature cited. Arial Font 11 to be used throughout the application.

Application Plan:The research plan must reflect experiments designed to test the dissertation hypotheses as approved by the doctoral advisory committee.

Restrictions on award funds:Awarded funds can only be used for stipend support. Two renewal applications may be submitted, for a total funding duration of three years.

(A)Specific Aims. State concisely and realistically what the research described in this application is intended to accomplish and/or what hypothesis is to be tested.

(B)Background/Significance.Applicants may use this section to provide an account of the principal investigator’s preliminary studies pertinent to the application and/or any other information that will help to establish the experience and competence of the investigator to pursue the proposed project. Briefly sketch the background to the present proposal, critically evaluate existing knowledge, and specifically identify the gaps which the project is intended to fill. State concisely the importance of the research described in this application by relating the specific aims to longer term objectives. Significance should be clearly indicated.
