In 2012, the Award was established by the N.A.P.P. Board in recognition of former Chair, Joe Corkill’s contribution to promotion of patient participation forover twenty years.

The Corkill Award is awarded annually at the N.A.P.P Conference and AGM.

The successful group receives

  • a cash payment of £500
  • a plaque for display within the winning practice
  • two free places at the Annual Conference and
  • the opportunity to speak then or at a future N.A.P.P. seminar

The prize money can be used in any way that the PPG chooses.

The winning group is invited to write a piece for the N.A.P.P. newsletter

The judges are N.A.P.P.’s Chairman, a member of the Trustee Board and Chief Executive.

Conditions

  1. Only PPGs that are members of NAPP on the 1st January in the year of the award are eligible to enter.
  2. The Award recognises outstanding work by a PPG in the preceding year (2017) which demonstrates achievement in relation onlyto the key themes set out in the criteria below
  3. Outstanding achievement may relate to helping a large number of people but can also include a scheme that had a significantimpact on relatively few people.
  4. Entries are particularly encouraged where the PPG has managed to succeed in difficult circumstances.
  5. PPGs demonstrating an innovative approach to patient engagement, health promotion or any other activities and specifically striving to engage with those sections of the population that are ‘harder to reach’, isolated or lonely, are particularly encouraged to enter.
  6. PPGs can nominate themselves but they can also be nominated by a patient, a GP and/or member of the practice team or another community organisation.
  7. PPGs which are entered for the Award must be willing to share their achievements with other PPGs, through local and national media andthrough N.A.P.P.’s own communication channels.
  8. The work or project conducted by the PPG should be something which can be replicated by other PPGs.

Please note:This focus of this award is about recognising excellent work by your PPG in building and maintaining relationships and communication between patients and the practice – it is notabout fund raising.

Judging your application

Applications will be judged by scoring your responses based on the extent to which your achievements demonstrate the following

Key activities:

Tell us how your PPG works in partnership with your practice to:

  1. contribute to the continuous improvement of services and quality of care as a ‘critical friend’ to the practice
  2. foster improved communication between the practice and its patients particularly those who are more difficult to reach/seldom heard
  3. help patients to take more responsibility for their health and offer support to patients in managing their conditions, making healthy choices and accessing information
  4. provide practical support for the practice and help to implement change

Please note: If your submission is shortlisted we may ask for more evidence and documentation to support your application including contacting you and your practice directly.

The information will be used separately to help N.A.P.P. in designing a larger surveyof the membership to establish a clearer picture of the structures and levels of organisation which are currently in place.

What makes an application stand out and have more chance of being shortlisted?

Responses to the questions need to focus on describinghow your PPG has made a positive and tangible impactin relation to the above keyactivitiesthat you undertake – you need to clearly specifyhow your group has made a difference for patients and the practice in terms of:

  1. What has changed/improved?
  2. How do you know things have changed?
  3. What do these changes mean for patients and the practice?
  4. What positive difference is there for patients and the practice?

Applications which demonstrate innovation will be welcome. Tell us about creative and different approaches you have used in your PPG and how you have done things differently including, but not limited to, the use of technology and social media.

Applications which demonstrate your PPG is trying to reach out and communicate with the widest cross section of the patient population will score highly. Those which particularly demonstrate activities to involve or reachthe following are more likely to be successful

  • striving to be inclusive of the full diversity of your community
  • effective communication with the patients of the practice
  • involving young people or the elderly
  • working with those from minority backgrounds or with mental health or communication difficulties
  • health promotion including initiatives to promote support self-care for minor ailments and / or self-management of long term conditions
  • working with the practice and / or your CCG to improve services such as provision of out-of-hours care
