Class Descriptions
Basic Circulation Policies and Procedures
Wednesday, November 4 – 9am-Noon – Large Meeting Room
Instructor: Dawn Dale,
Join Dawn Dale for an introduction to the Evergreen Staff Client and the basic PINES circulation policies and procedures. This will include an overview of the various modules within the staff client, how to navigate between the screens and customize which columns you see in search results and tables, how to properly create new patron accounts and update existing accounts, what the differences in patron types mean, how to find circulation policy information, and the differences between PINES policies and local policies. This class is directed primarily at newer circulation staff who have not had a chance to receive training from PINES staff, but anyone who would like a refresher is also welcome.
Basic Reports
This class is being offered twice – please sign up for one session only!
- Wednesday, November 4 – 9am-Noon – Board Room
- Thursday, November 5 – 9am-Noon – Board Room
Instructor: Terran McCanna,
This class is designed for library staff new to using reports who would like an introduction to the general process of finding an existing report template and running it, but who are not yet ready to create new reports from scratch. You will learn to set up reports folders, locate shared templates that you are interested in, and set them up to run once or on a scheduled basis. You will also learn how to make minor modifications to templates, such as adding or removing columns from the report results. We will also go over the new PINES Quick Reports interface.
*** Please bring a laptop with Evergreen installed. If you do not have access to one, please contact us in advance so that we can try to arrange for one.
*** Attendees will need user permissions to create and run reports. If you are not sure if you have these permissions or not, please contact the instructor in advance or come to class a few minutes early. Attendees logging in with a Library Manager or LocalAdmin account will automatically have user permissions.
Customizing Evergreen Receipt Templates
Thursday, November 5 – 1:30pm-3:00pm – Board Room
Instructor: Terran McCanna,
Do you want to add your library’s logo to a receipt, add an extra piece of information to a receipt, or change the layout or text size? Do you want to advertise upcoming programs or closures on the receipts without having to change every workstation each time you wish to change the information? Join us to learn how to customize your library’s receipt templates, and to get hands-on practice.
*** Please bring a laptop with Evergreen installed. If you do not have access to one, please contact us in advance so that we can try to arrange for one.
GLASS Outreach Services
Thursday, November 5 – 1:30pm-3:00pm – Large Meeting Room
Instructor: Pat Herndon,
Pat Herndon, Director of Georgia Libraries for Accessible Statewide Services (GLASS), will speak about the types of services that GLASS can offer Georgia’s patrons, ways you can inform patrons about GLASS, and what the eligibility requirements are for registering with GLASS.
Library Share-A-Rama
Thursday, November 5 – 3:10pm-4:30pm – Large Meeting Room
Coordinators: Terran McCanna, and Dawn Dale,
We will wrap up the PINES Mini-Conference by gathering in the large meeting room for a chance for all of you to share ideas for new programs you are doing, your approaches to fundraising or creative problem solving, how you manage your outreach activities, and anything else you are excited about that you would like to share, or questions you would like to ask of other libraries!
Short Topics:
Wednesday, November 4 – 1:30pm-4:30pm – Board Room
Instructor: Terran McCanna,
During this afternoon session we will go over several topics and features. If there are other topics you would like us to include, please contact the instructor before class.
*** Please bring a laptop with Evergreen installed. If you do not have access to one, please contact us in advance so that we can try to arrange for one.
B4’s Online Book Logs
Get hands-on experience exploring the 1000 Books B4 Kindergarten web site so that you can better assist your patrons with using its various features. Learn to invite and manage secondary caregiver accounts from a parent’s perspective, and learn to add a book to multiple reading logs at the same time from a staff perspective. Learn to access usage statistics so that you can determine how many of your patrons are using the system.
PINES Book Lists
Get hands-on experience using the List functionality in the OPAC to create reading lists that you can share with the public. Learn how to capture the link and modify it to view in either the OPAC or KPAC format so that you can share it on your website, facebook page, email, or anywhere else you are able to share a link. Creating reading lists in this manner has several advantages over creating reading lists with other methods – namely, the holdings are always up to date, and patrons can place holds without having to leave the list. Since you can create as many lists as you like and modify them as often as you like, you can use this function to maintain book lists for book clubs, storytimes, seasonal events, topics in the news, bestseller lists, readalikes for popular books, and anything else that you can think of that your patrons might appreciate.
Standalone Procedures
The Evergreen Standalone Interface is designed to allow you to continue to check books out to patrons even when the server is down (during an upgrade) or when you have power but no Internet (such as when doing outreach activities). There are several advantages to using the Standalone as opposed to tracking checkouts on a spreadsheet – it reduces manual entry (which usually reduces time and errors), and if used properly it will also alert you if the patron’s account is expired, inactive, barred, or has max fines.
Attend this class to learn the proper procedures and best practices for using the Standalone and how to upload the files once you can connect to the server, and how to correct any upload conflicts.
Other?
In the remaining time, we willgo over additional Evergreen functions and features you have questions about!
Troubleshooting Circulation and Billing Issues
This class is being offered twice – please sign up for one session only!

Instructor: Dawn Dale,
Having problems correcting negative bills? Need to separate a cloned patron’s address from their parent account? Confused by the difference in processing fees and max fines between different libraries? Dawn will demonstrate the proper procedures and best practices for resolving these issues and more. Bring your questions and feel free to email Dawn specific account questions in advance so that she may use them in the demos.
