Mogollon Rendezvous 2011 Outpost Report

Summary / goals of activity:

· Provide a safe and fun shooting environment

Safety Concerns:

1. No back drop, arrows fly into the woods (have to be retrieved)

2. Need to ensure nobody is in woods behind range when arrows are being shot

3. Compound bows are issued by council. Re-curve bows would be better for the boys, because they do not have to be drawn back as far and are easier to use

4. Area around range is fenced off, so no tape should be needed to secure area

Staffing needs. (Assignments, and tasks to man)

1. Knowledgeable staff, three to four people recommend to man area

Layout and location of area. (Sq feet, tables, canopies and chairs, etc use photos)

1. Location is in an open field, no backdrop or tarp to catch arrows

2. No shaded area, tables, or chairs. You must bring your own

3. No straw on location, must bring your own

1. Knowledgeable staff with experience

1.  Bows and arrows are held by the district council. Contact Gary Jones (480) 773-3924

2.  Twelve bows were issued; ten stations were set up for shooting (8 right handed and two left handed).

3.  Homemade printed paper targets were used and tied onto the straw bails. They can be re-used several times over.

4.  Try and have extra arrows, as you will lose some in the woods if there is no backdrop to catch them.

Workflow Narrative of how to make it work and biggest challenges.

· Have a “safety meeting going while the participants are waiting to shoot. After the safety issues are discussed the team is released to the range for the shooting disciplines.

. Each scout shot three arrows, after all of the arrows were shot they were released to retrieve their arrows. After all arrows were found, each scout got to shoot three more arrows for a total of six arrows.

Scoring strategy (team dress, cheer/spirit, teamwork, time (if timed), quality of work, etc)

1. Total of 10 points is possible for this event

a. Team unity (i.e. the entire team was present at the activity all together)

b. Team spirit (i.e. team cheer/yell)

c. Range Safety

Outpost awards: (Typical awards, details, and costs.)

1.  Red Rider BB gun was awarded for the entire marksmanship area best score ($34.99)

2.  Sling shot (wrist rockets) were awarded for best individual shooter/team ($8.99)

Transportation of materials, set-up, tear down resources or special tools.

1. 30 bails of straw were needed, they were transported in by a large trailer.

2. Bows and arrows can be stored in a small box overnight, but must be locked.

3. Area is in a field and has no support facilities. Recommend transporting in a table, chairs, and a tarp for shade.
