Seniors,

You should continue your college applications this month. Remember to visit college websites to determine the deadlines for Open House registrations, applications, scholarships and special programs. Be sure to meet all applicable deadlines. Please see me if you need assistance with anything to plan for your life after high school. Here are the October scholarships; you should apply for all scholarships where you meet the eligibility criteria.

Horatio Alger Scholarship: If integrity, determination and courage describe you, then you have what it takes to be a Horatio Alger Scholar and receive up to $20 thousand for college costs. To qualify, you must have a 2.0 GPA, be a US citizen and require financial assistance to go to college. Apply online at Deadline is October 25, 2012.

Nuestra Juventud Scholarship Program recognizes young Hispanic leaders in NC schools. Nuestra Juventud is sponsored by the NC Society of Hispanic Professionals (NCHSP). Criteria: high school senior of Hispanic background, with proven leadership academic achievement and character; must provide transcript. Apply online at: Deadline is November 10, 2012.

Voice of Democracy Scholarship : Created in 1947, the Voice of Democracy (VOD) scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12 that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships. The firs-place winner receives a $20,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. This year’s theme is : Is our constitution still relevant?” Details available online at:

Service Academies: US Air Force Academy, West Point, Naval Academy and/or Merchant Marine Academy. Requires nomination by Congressman Larry Kissell. Applications must contain the Applicatin for Nomination from Congressman Kissell’s website: Must also provide transcript, SAT/ACT scores, a resume of extracurricular activities, three recommendation letters, essay and good-quality color photo of yourself. Deadline: 5 PM onNovember 1, 2012.

Coca-Cola Scholars: Must be US Citizen/resident with GPA of at least 3.0; cannot be child or grandchild of Coca Cola employee. This scholarship awards $3 million to 250 students. Apply online at: Deadline: October 31, 2012.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards: If you ‘ve made a difference through volunteering over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a trip to Washington, DC. Apply online: Click on Apply Now link and follow onscreen instructions. Deadline: November 16, 2012.

Ron Brown Scholar Program: The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be US Citizen/permanent resident. Wyllie Scholars at Sweet Briar College: Sweet Briar College is a small, Liberal Arts & Sciences college for women in Sweet Briar, VA. The Wyllie Scholars offers up to $5,000 yearly for students interested in an engineering-related career. Apply online: Deadline: Applications accepted on rolling basis between December 15, 2012 and February 15, 2013.

UNC Charlotte Levine Scholars Program: Levine Scholars offers a four-year scholarship that includes full tuition, room & board in the honors residence hall, a new laptop, four summer experiences, service grant access, enrollment in the honors program, and mentoring relationships with civic and business leaders. You are encouraged to apply if you demonstrate commitment to community service, an excellent academic record and a capacity for ethical leadership. NC State University College of Textiles Centennial Scholarship: This scholarship is among the highest valued scholarships offered at NC State. Selection is based on high academic achievement, leadership qualities, extra-curricular activities and unique life experiences. Nominees should have willingness to enter one of the top-rated Textile degree programs at NC State ( High schools can nominate up to 2 qualified students for this scholarship. If interested, students should sign list in Guidance Office by 10/15/12. Any students who attended a summer program at NC State (STEP or Polymer Camp) are automatically nominated. Davidson College John Belk Scholarship: 6 Scholarships awarded @ over $52,000/each. Must demonstrate outstanding intellectual and personal achievements and leadership ability. Recipients will receive an annual renewable scholarship equal to all college fees and two summer stipends. EMHS can nominate one student. If interested, sign list in Guidance Office by November 1st. Additionally, you must complete your application to Davidson by December 3, 2012.

Sun Trust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes: High school seniors can enter for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship for college tuition. One winner will be chosen every two weeks from Oct. 26, 2012 through May 10, 2013. Free to enter; not based on GPA. You must re-register for each drawing. Apply online:

Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild: All high school students are eligible to submit one piece of art for display at the NC Fairgrounds during Thanksgiving week. Art must be original, made by hand and craft media including: clay, fiber glass, jewelry, metal, wood, furniture, photography paper and mixed media. Paintings are not eligible. The best in exhibit will be awarded a $500 prize. For more information, visit:

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award: Are you a young entrepreneur? Graduating seniors who operate their own small business are eligible to receive a 2013 NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award from the NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation. The CSS Profileis required, in addition to the FAFSA, for additional financial aid consideration for the following schools: Davidson, Elon, Guilford College, Meredith College, NC State, Salem College, UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest and other out-of-state schools. You should submit your CSS Profile as soon as possible to meet all deadlines. Profile forms are available online at: There is a cost for processing the application, but if you complete one online, there is an automatic fee waiver calculation for anyone who is eligible.
