Prerequisite(s): Grade 11 or equivalent, a demonstrated interest in the beauty industry and in a career as a Nail Technician. Successful pre-registration interview.

Special Training, Facilities or Equipment Required:

Instructor: Must have proof of 5 years of experience as a nail technician, current advanced education in product knowledge and technical skills. The instructor must be in good standing with the Cosmetology Industry Association of BC or hold a current license in the province, state or country last resided in.

The facilities: Should include a classroom and a salon setting.

Classroom Purposes: overhead projector, VCR and television, internet access for research projects.

Salon Purposes: Tables and chairs, sanitation trays and chemicals, nail art supplies, airbrush supplies, also towels and laundry facilities.

Course Synopsis:

This course covers such topics as salon business, records, advertising and client record keeping, also the different types of pay related to our fields of study. The students will create a current resume and cover letter. This course also covers the creative and colorful part of the nail technology business.

Rationale:

The students are training to be part of a $6 billion nail care industry. If they want to be financially successful in this business, they must know more than how to give clients manicures, pedicures, or artificial nail services. You need to be a well-rounded, good business person. From the moment the student receives a job offer, they will have to negotiate how much money they earn and how they are to be paid. When they develop a clientele, they will handle tips and possibly, commission.

Unit/Topic/Module Descriptions:

Unit 1:Overview

If the student wants to be a successful nail technician, they need to be a good salesperson too. They are responsible for selling both nail services and the products that will help your clients maintain those services.

It is expected that the student will:

  • Explain the few basic rules to follow to achieve success with nail art.
  • Demonstrate five hand painted and five airbrushed nail art design tips.
  • Describe the different nail art products, brushes and their uses.

Unit 2:Overview

This unit covers area such as the advantages of keeping proper services, inventory control and personal appointment records and the guidelines that should be followed when booking appointments or going through the interview process when looking for employment.

It is expected that the student will:

  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of working in the four types of salons.
  • List ten questions the students will need to ask before deciding which salon is right for the student.
  • Explain the differences between expenses and income, salary or commission.

Unit 3:Overview

In the unit you will learn about setting prices for and marketing your products and services, basic principles, and tracking their successes.

Unit 4:Overview

Students will in this unit will research and create a current cover letter and resume and prepare themselves for the work force.

Unit 5:Overview

Students will perform such services as their training advances on clients that have phoned in from the students advertising campaign throughout the community. As any salon setting would have.
