Introduction to Becoming a Magistrate

This interactive session provides a general understanding of the role of a magistrate and the application process. It is ideal for anyone who ever wondered what a magistrate does, or is interested in applying.
Introduction to Being a Trustee
29th July, 8th September 2010 & 17th March 2011 (6pm-8pm)
This session provides an introduction to the role of a trustee and the rights and responsibilities involved. It is great for anyone thinking about becoming a trustee or committee member.
Developing a Project – from Idea to Proposal
14th October & 16th December 2010 (10am – 4pm)
The aim of this course is to increase participants’ skills & confidence in developing an idea into a proposal for a project. / Effective Meeting Skills
28th October 2010 & 17th March 2011 (10am-4pm)
To have a clear understanding of what makes an effective meeting and give you the confidence to get your point across and get the most out of meetings.
Effective Lobbying

This course is to equip delegates with the skills and knowledge to campaign or lobby effectively.

This course aims to give participants the skills to represent other members of the community.
How Southwark Works - Understanding Public Services
13th July, 23rd November & March 2011 (10am-4pm)
This course will look at the roles of the different departments within Southwark Council, and how to
access the services they provide. It will give an overview of local democracy and how it works. / Skills for Active Citizens
Public Speaking Skills
6th July & 28th October 2010 (10am-4pm)
This course supports Active Citizens to develop or improve their confidence to speak in public by providing them with the necessary skills and techniques.
Introduction to Becoming an Active Citizen
16th June 23rd September (10am- 12pm) 2nd November 2010 (2pm-4pm)
This course looks at volunteering and active citizenship and the different options available. By the end of the session you will be able to take away information about how and where you can get involved.
Working with Diversity (Community Cohesion in Practice)
10th June, 30th September, 2nd December 2010 &10th March 2011 (10am – 2pm)
This session defines what community cohesion is, looks at diversity from a local and national perspective and the events that have lead to a change in policy. It will demonstrate how participants can assist in developing community cohesion.
Developing Networks
30th September & December 2010 (6pm-8pm)
This course is to enable participants to develop a better understanding of how residents can work together to make a difference in their community. Find out who you need to know to get things done in your community.
Sources of Advice in Southwark
5th August & 25th November 2010 Time (TBC)
There are often times when Active Citizens need to get specialist advice. It isn’t always easy to know where to go to access this advice or what will happen at an advice centre. This course will inform on the different sources of advice in Southwark. Explaining what’s out there.
Mid/Longer Term Courses
Communications and Public Life
(5 consecutive Tuesdays)
First session on the 1st February 2011
This course is run in partnership with the WEA. It aims to give participants stronger communications skills, with a focus on giving them information about public life and how to influence it. / Community Advocacy
(3 consecutive sessions)
18,19 & 20 October 2010 (10am-4pm)
The course prepares participants to advocate effectively on behalf of their communities and organisations, and to give the voluntary and community sector and local residents a stronger voice.
Community Leadership
(8 sessions, one per week)

This is an in-depth learning programme for Southwark individuals who are committed to creating change in their community. You may already be part of an informal group or network which is active in Southwark or maybe you are just beginning. Either way this course will be a valuable tool. There will be an informal application process, and we aim to meet individuals’ support and access requirements as best we can to ensure a range of participants can be involved.
Training the Trainer in Active Citizenship
(4 sessions, one per week)
First session on the 7th September 2010
This course is run in partnership with the WEA. It aims to give participants the skills to deliver training to their peers, colleagues or members of their community group. / Bespoke Training for Southwark Groups
