Seasonal Code Enforcement Officer – Village of Gurnee, IL

The Village of Gurnee seeks candidates for the position of Seasonal Code Enforcement Officer within the Community Development Department. Contractual position with a flexible work schedule of an average 30 hours per week mid-April through mid-September and average 10 hours per week during “off season” of mid-September to mid-April. Work is generally performed between 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday but occasional hours outside of this work schedule (evening or weekend) may be required.

This position is performs work involving inspection, regulation and enforcement of Village codes and ordinances related to nuisance abatement, property maintenance, zoning, signs and noise. Work will also require response to complaints regarding property maintenance or other municipal code violations.

The ideal candidate will have a proactive philosophy toward enforcement and regulation and be responsive with a positive customer service orientation. This position requires a high degree of interaction with the general public, residents, and business owners in a courteous and professional manner. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Strong organizational skills and solid knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel are critical. Experience working with database programs related to property maintenance / building codes preferred; experience with GIS programs desirable.

Candidates must have a valid driver’s license, safe driving history, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Other qualifications include college-level coursework in relevant curriculum (planning, geography, building inspection, etc.) and preferably 2-3+ years of experience performing code enforcement, property maintenance, or similar duties of a comparable nature. Municipal code enforcement experience preferred; ICC Property Maintenance Inspector Certification desirable but not required. Unless otherwise indicated, the qualifications listed are guidelines; other combinations of education and experience, which could provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job, may be considered.

Hourly rate of pay: $15 / hour; no benefits.
