Information about your group/organization:

1.Name of the group/organization requesting funds:

SHED (Society for Health & Educational Development)

2.When was the group established?

2007

3.Briefly describe the motivation for starting this group.

SHED is based in a rural area near Guwahati, Asssam.

SHED was started to solve two basic problems:

1.Underprivileged children and children with disabilities in this area have no access to a decent education. Underprivileged children include tribal children living in hamlets, underprivileged girls in the age group 5-18, children who have faced domestic or other violence, orphans, and other poor children. Children with disabilities include physical and mental disabilities.

2. Disabled children are not integrated into mainstream society which causes them to suffer economically and otherwise later in life.

4.Briefly describe the short term and long terms aims/goals of the group.

SHED aims to solve the above listed problems by providing an integrated school and residential facilities for the targeted children groups - underprivileged and physically and mentally disabled. This integrated school provides benefits to both groups of children:

- Enables strong interaction between both groups of children without requiring them to study in the same classroom

- Provides a great way for children in crisis and underprivileged children to increase their own self-worth by being buddies to disabled children. The disabled children also build great friendships with people different from their own to increase their own confidence to integrate in mainstream society

Short term goal of SHED is to provide good schooling and development environment for the current students.

Long term goal vision is to enable the underprivileged and disabled children to be grow up as responsible, productive citizens and live with dignity.

The integrated school was started in 2007 in a rented facility.

In March 2013, SHED acquired their own land with help from other sources and relocated the school to this new location. SHED also started providing residential facilities at this new location.

Currently there are 23 students :

-13 are hostellers. All of these are mentally challenged

-10 underprivileged non-disabled day scholars.

The current SHED facility includes a

-Classroom building : This building is thatched with tin roof. There are 4 classrooms.

-Multi-purpose building : This building is concrete with tin roof. The multi-purpose is divided into 3 parts ;

i)Kitchen plus dining hall

ii)Girls dormitory with attached toilet and bathroom

iii)Office with attached toilet.

The kitchen plus dining hall is the largest of the 3 parts.

-1 boys dormitory : This building is concrete with tin roof. The boys dormitory has 2 attached bathrooms and 2 attached toilets.

-Additional toilet facilities for the school : 1 boys and 1 girls.

The current school building being a thatched/open structure is hampering the children’s education especially during poor weather like in summer monsoon season.

In the next year SHED plans to build a concrete school building with 5 classroom to enable the students to carry out their studies in a more capable structure. This will also enable SHED to increase the capacity of the school to include 30 additional day scholars. These 30 additional day scholars will be from the underprivileged families.

Also SHED plans to add 10 additional hostellers who are hearing impaired to bring the total hostellers to 23.

To house these 10 additional hostellers SHED plans to convert the kitchen cum dining hall of the Multi-purpose room into a dormitory.

The reason for adding hearing impaired students is that :

- there is lack of proper school for hearing impaired students in Sonapur and nearby areas. Closest school for hearing impaired is in Guwahati which is over 40km away. Many parents of hearing impaired student from nearby areas have approached SHED to see if they can send their children to the school and hostel.

- hearing impaired children have quite capable and having them as hostellers will bring greater interaction with the children who are mentally challenged

- they do not need the constant care/watch as a mentally challenged student would need hence require less additional staff.
