Legislators and Commissioners Learn About Hospitals and Healthcare Reform
The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation Hosts Workshop at NCOIL Meeting
WORTHINGTON, OH (March 12, 2013) —Legislators and commissionersknow more about hospitals and healthcare reform, after attending a workshop presented by The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation. The workshop was held on March 9 in Washington, D.C. during the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) 2013 Spring Meeting.
A total of 35legislators and regulators attended the workshop. Both The Griffith Foundation and NCOIL share a collective mission to provide insurance education to legislators nationwide so that policymakers can make better-informed decisions on insurance issues that affect their constituents.
“We are glad to partner with The Griffith Foundation to offer insurance education programs to NCOIL member legislators,” said Tennessee State Representative and NCOIL President Charles Curtiss. “Their objective approach helps legislators gain an accurate understanding of the issues facing the insurance industry.”
The workshop, Hospitals and Healthcare Reform: What Does the Affordable Care Act Mean for Facilities Big and Small?, provided an overview of plans hospitals are making for their payment and care delivery models. Both payment and care delivery models are expected to continue changing, as hospitals and health systems prepare for changes resulting from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).
William Hayes, PhD, adjunct professor at The Ohio State University College of Public Health and director of healthcare reform at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, conducted the luncheon workshop. “I am pleased to educate our legislators on important changes to healthcare reform that will affect their constituents,” he said.
This workshop was designed to provide state policymakers with a better understanding of:
- How healthcare reform will impact hospitals
- What hospitals are doing to prepare for Medicare readmission penalties
- Trends in the area of quality improvement
- New payment models being considered
- Potential new care models
- How health insurers may respond
“For over 20 years, one of the strategic initiatives of The Griffith Foundation has been to provide objective, nonpartisan, non-advocacy programs with an educational philosophy,” said Melissa Wheeler, program director of public policymaker education for The Griffith Foundation. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with NCOIL to fulfill our mission.”
