Dear Parents/Carers,

Gorse Ride Junior School Cycle Permit

Gorse Ride Junior School supports families who wish their children to walk or, in the case of over 10 year olds, to cycle to school since it improves their health and fitness; reduces traffic outside the school making conditions safer for everyone and benefits their general development.

If you wish your child to cycle to school, please complete the form below. We are able to make appropriate security and safety arrangements for an agreed group of older aged cyclists.

While Gorse Ride Junior School wishes to encourage an increase in the number of pupils cycling to school, the decision as to whether your child can do so safely must be yours and yours alone. It is for you to decide whether your child is competent to negotiate such hazards as may present themselves on the route from home to school. Gorse Ride Junior School does not accept liability for any consequences of that decision.

Parents are advised to take out appropriate insurance cover as the school’s insurance does not cover loss or damage to bicycles.

Permission to cycle to school will only be granted to children who are at least 10 years old. This is following advice from road safety colleagues.

If you wish your child to cycle to school and store their bicycle on the school premises, you and your child must agree to the following conditions:

·  Your child must have passed their Level 2 cycle training. Proof of this will be needed for any child who did not pass the training offered by the school.

·  The cycle must be roadworthy.

·  Your child must cycle to and from school in a safe and sensible manner.

·  A cycle helmet must be worn.

·  Your child must only carry belongings in a rucksack.

·  Your child must not cycle anywhere on the school site, including the playground and school drive.

·  A cycle lock must be used to secure the bicycle.

·  Your child must only access their own bicycle on school premises.

Failure to adhere to the conditions above will result in permission to enter the school site with their cycle being withdrawn, either temporarily or permanently.

If you are happy to agree to these conditions, please sign and return the attached form, keeping this letter for your own reference. Once permission has been granted you will receive a cycle permit and your child will be able to cycle to school and store their cycle on school premises.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Louise Holloway

Deputy Headteacher
