Kentucky File

The Brantleys of Kentucky, except for a few others who passed through, were all descendants of James Brantley,a man who fled Georgia in 1811 after having killed of Elijah Beacham in a fight. They were acquaintances in Montgomery County, Ga prior to the incident. What sponsored the fight that lead to the death of Beacham is not known. James, after spending a few years in Sumter and surrounding counties in Tennessee, went to Livingston County, KY. This section later became CrittendenCounty. Most all of the Brantleys of Kentucky were in CrittendenCounty and surrounding counties, Webster, Livingston, and Union all through the 1800s and early 1900s. Some of them were in Illinois by 1880. Most of the data in our files is from the history of the family, but hundreds of marriages of them are on file in CrittendenCounty. The late Earnest Brantley was one of the large contributors of information, spending money for research all over the southeast. James Brantley, of Fairburn, Ohio, also a descendant of this family, has conducted much work. Brenda Underdown has furnished us much information and has been an avid researcher since becoming a member of the Brantley Association.

TAX BOOKS LIVINGSTON COUNTY, KENTUCKY, Microfilm No. 248 [This is a verbatim transcription of a page I have in my files typed by unknown researcher.] Barbara O’Nan

1812, pg 1: James Brantley appears with 64 acres of 3rd rate land on Hoods creek, entered in the name of Barry Page, as 1 white male, with 3 horses, mares.

1813, pg 2: The land was listed as 74 acres entered in the name of L. B. Page.

1814, pg 3: The land was listed as 64 acres of 3rd rate land on Hoods cr, entered in the name of L. B. Page as 1 white male with 4 horses, mares.

1815, pg 22: The same listed.

1816, pg 1: The same 64 acres of land was entered and patented in the names of B. Page and J. Brantley, respectively.

1817, pg 2: the same land is listed, along with 160 acres of 3rd rate land on Hoods Ck, entered in the name of R. Galloway. 1 white male, with 5 horses, mares was listed opposite the 64 acres, indicating that he was living on that land.

In 1818, pg 1, the 64 acres was listed as being on Crooked Ck. N.B. William Brantley appears with 160 acres of 3rd rate land, as 1 white male with 1 horse or mare. The above 160 acres may have been William's as his name follows that of James as 1 white male. Verified. Listing is for James Brantley.

Please note that the above land is on "Hoods Creek"!I wonder ifthere isa connection to the Edward Hood listed in the Hancock Co, GA record?
