A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
HONORING MRS. ELIZABETH BISHOP TILLER ON THE OCCASION OF RECENTLY BEING RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF SUMTER COUNTY’S OUTSTANDING WOMEN AND THE ADDITION OF HER NAME TO THE “2001 WOMEN’S HONOR ROLL OF SUMTER COUNTY” FOR HER LIFELONG COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO SUMTER COUNTY AND THE PALMETTO STATE.
Whereas, March is National Women’s History Month and highlights the accomplishments of women and the need to open new doors in the future. The Sumter Volunteers, Inc., annually honors women who have gone consistently above and beyond the call of duty in giving back to Sumter County; and
Whereas, Mrs. Tiller attended Inman schools and earned a bachelor of arts degree in history and social sciences from Coker College; she also has a master’s degree in secondary counseling and has accrued over 30 hours in education administration from the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, Mrs. Elizabeth Bishop Tiller is married to Harvey W. Tiller, Jr., with whom she recently celebrated her fiftieth wedding anniversary. She and her husband are the proud parents and grandparents of three children and three grandchildren; and
Whereas, Mrs. Elizabeth Tiller began her career as an educator in 1952 as a substitute teacher in the Sumter schools and later used her time and abilities to teach in the talented and gifted program at Hillcrest High School, eventually becoming the program coordinator until her retirement in 1994; and
Whereas, Mrs. Elizabeth Tiller has been involved in a wide range of community activities including her work on the Sumter County Museum board, the Sumter Cancer Board, and the Sumter County Historical Commission; she also served in positions of leadership in a number of historical and cultural organizations; and
Whereas, Mrs. Tiller is a member of Mayesville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where she teaches Sunday school to high school and collegeaged church members. She previously served as President of the Women of the Church and as a youth group leader; and
Whereas, Mrs. Elizabeth Bishop Tiller’s tireless devotion provides a positive role model and example of service for all of her peers to emulate. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Mrs. Elizabeth Bishop Tiller upon the occasion of recently being recognized as one of Sumter County’s outstanding women and the addition of her name to the “2001 Women’s Honor Roll of Sumter County” for her lifelong commitment and dedication to Sumter County and the Palmetto State.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Elizabeth Bishop Tiller.
