Buckeye Voices: Carrying on the Schweitzer legacy

-- Following in the footsteps of humanitarian and Nobel Laureate Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the Columbus-Athens Schweitzer Fellows design and implement yearlong programs to help vulnerable populations, writes Fellowship Director Chip Bahn. To date, nearly 2,500 Schweitzer Fellows have delivered almost 500,000 hours of service to approximately 300,000 people in need.

RNAs becoming targets for drug discoveries

MicroRNAs and other non-coding RNAs are involved in many cellular processes with links to many chronic diseases like cancer and heart failure. RNAs also are becoming targets for drug discovery with clinical trials getting underway quickly. On Thursday (4/30) at 4:30 p.m., President Dr. Michael V. Drake opens a conference at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and Dr. Carlo Croce delivers the keynote on “MicroRNAs and Cancer.”

Arps elevator restoration begins

-- Effective immediately, the Arps garage elevator has been removed from service to begin restoration work, which is expected to be complete by mid-August. The elevator will be unavailable for the duration of the project; however, please note that all ADA accessible spaces are located on the ground floor. For customers who prefer to park in a garage with elevator service, the Lane Avenue, Tuttle Park Place or Ohio Union North garages are recommended.

Molecular Genetics Graduate Students Present Waller Lecture Series

-- Richard Amasino of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will deliver the 39th Annual Adolph E. Waller Memorial Lecture Series on Thursday (4/16) and Friday (4/17). The technical lecture, “How plants remember winter so they can flower in the spring,” takes place Thursday (4/16) at 4:10 p.m. in 111 Parks. Join the public lecture, “Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Public Perception of Science,“ on Friday (4/17) at 4 p.m. in 355 Jennings.

China and the Jews in the Modern Era April 19

Zeidan to present arts and humanities lecture

-- As part of the Arts and Humanities Inaugural Lecture Series,Joseph Zeidan,Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, will discuss, “The canonization of the Greco-Roman Form of Theater in the Arab World” at 5 p.m. Tuesday (4/21) in the Faculty Club’s Grand Lounge. The lecture will explore the ramifications of introducing the Greco-Roman form of theater into the Arabic culture in the middle of the 19th century. Lecture and reception are free are open to all.

Dartmouth professor speaks on international security

-- Stephen Brooks, associate professor of government at Dartmouth University, will speak about "The Political Economy of International Security" at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/22) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. His presentation will delineate why our underlying understanding of the role of economics in international relations is inadequate and how this can be rectified.

GLBT Alumni Society hosts discussion

-- On Wednesday (4/22), the Ohio State GLBT Alumni Society will host professors Yana Hashamova and Jennifer Suchland (Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures) for a special discussion, "Queerphobia Around the World: A Postcard from Russia." The talk will be held from 6-7 p.m. in 010 Page Hall. Light refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited to this free event.

Boeing executive on future of aerospace, aviation

-- The College of Engineering’s Distinguished Lecture series is featuring Boeing Chief Information Officer John Tracy on Thursday (4/23) from 1-2 p.m. in 140 Pfahl Hall. Tracy oversees the development and implementation of Boeing’s technology investment strategy and provides strategic direction to more than 100,000 employees.

Help clean up tobacco litter on campus

-- As part of its ongoing commitment to a tobacco-free campus, Ohio State is hosting its third annual tobacco litter cleanup on its Columbus campus Friday (4/24) from 3:30-5 p.m. The cleanup helps keep our community clean and provides important data to the tobacco-free initiative. Volunteers will meet at the Women’s Fieldhouse between 3:15 and 3:30.

National Pilot Summit April 28

-- An information and networking forum on Monday (4/28) from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. will take place at The Blackwell. Industry,government, education and nonprofit leaders will include a discussion on the short- and long-term implications offinding qualified professionalpilots between now and the next 5-10 years. The event is hosted by Ohio State’s Center for Aviation Studies in partnership with the College of Engineering, Fisher College of Business and the John Glenn College of Public Affairs.
