BASIC TRAINING COURSES FOR AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE ENGINEERS
(This Airworthiness Notice supersedes AN No. C002, Edition 9, dated 30 March 2005.)
Introduction
In order to obtain an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) licence, an applicant is required to successfully complete an acceptable or approved basic training course.
Information pertaining to the applicable amount of experience credit granted for both past (historical) and currently approved training programs can be found on the Transport Canada (TC) Internet website at:
www.tc.gc.ca (Air - Civil Aviation – Aircraft Maintenance and Manufacturing – AME Licensing and Training).
Information on TC course/program approval numbers is available on the TC AME Licensing and Training Intranet web site only.
Acceptable Basic Training Courses – Appendix A
The acceptable Basic Training courses listed in Appendix A of this notice have been found to meet the theoretical training requirements of Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), Standard (STD) 566 (Division II). These courses were provided during specific time frames as listed. Acceptable basic training courses are required to cover the full range of theory applicable to the rating requested, and to provide no less than the following amount of instruction:
Applicable Licence Rating / Curriculum Subject Matter / Minimum Training Required· ‘M’ Rating / · Small and Large Aircraft Maintenance Theory / · no less than 1000 hours
· ‘E’ Rating / · Electronic Systems Maintenance Theory / · no less than 1000 hours
· ‘S’ Rating / · Aircraft Structures Maintenance Theory / · no less than 550 hours
AME applicants are required to provide the necessary documentation to demonstrate that they have successfully completed this type of training. Acceptable structured training courses do not provide experience or technical knowledge credit. Applicants who graduate from these types of courses are required to successfully complete the applicable TC technical knowledge examinations as well as meeting all other requirements of STD566 for licence issue.
Courses not listed in this Airworthiness Notice (AN) or on the TC website will be reviewed on an individual basis by TC. AME applicants who have graduated from a course not listed in this AN must provide a complete training course curriculum (which identifies subjects taken, hours per subject), a transcript of marks and a certificate or diploma of graduation to TC for review.
Approved Basic Training Courses – Appendix B
Basic training courses provided by TC approved training organizations (ATO’s) are identified in Appendix B of this AN. Approved training courses are required to provide no less than the number of training hours indicated:
Applicable Licence Rating / Curriculum Subject Matter / Minimum Training Required· ‘M’ Rating / · Small and Large Aircraft Maintenance Training / · For credit = 1800 hours
· Basic training only = 1000 hours
· ‘E’ Rating / · Electronic Systems Maintenance Training / · For credit = 1800 hours
· Basic training only = 1000 hours
· ‘S’ Rating / · Aircraft Structures Maintenance Training / · For credit = 1000 hours
· Basic training only = 550 hours
Eligibility for Credit:
Documents (e.g.: certificates, diplomas, or letters of attestation as applicable) issued by an approved basic training program that is eligible for credit will be annotated with a specific “TC” approval number. The TC approval number will identify courses that have been approved for experience credit only or experience and technical knowledge credit.
Experience credit is applicable to the total experience requirement only and not to any group, type, or product experience requirements.
Technical Examination credit is applicable to students who have successfully graduated from a course approved for such credit as listed in this notice and/or on the TC website. Such students are deemed to have met the technical knowledge requirement and will not be required to attempt the TC technical knowledge examinations.
AME applicants, who have graduated from a TC-approved training program that provides credit but have not met the requirements for issue of the applicable credit, will be required to successfully complete the TC technical knowledge examinations in addition to any other requirements of STD 566 (as applicable).
AME applicants, who have graduated from a TC-approved training program that does not provide credit, will be required to successfully complete the TC technical knowledge examinations in addition to any other requirements of STD 566 (as applicable).
Note: Aircraft type training courses are not acceptable towards meeting the basic training requirement.
Training Program Curricula Content - Appendix C
A third-party curriculum, which has been recognized by TC as meeting the intent of STD 566, Appendix C, is identified in Appendix C.
