7. Lessons learnt: -
· Tunnels are important elements of Infrastructure projects, Hydro Power, Transportation etc. From the tunneling perspective, the Himalayas pose the most challenging ground conditions almost in the world due to complexity of Himalayan geology. Therefore tunneling activity in various projects in Himalayas are suffered by diverse geological problems such as difficult terrain conditions, thrust zones, shear zones, folded rock sequence, in-situ stresses, rock cover, ingress of water, geothermal gradient, ingress of gases, high level of seismicity etc. All these challenges may result in increased cost and extended completion period. We go to catch up with modern tunnel construction technologies. I.e. understanding the ENGINEERING CHALLENGES like geological /geotechnical assessment, tunnel excavation and vital role in deciding the support requirement as well as the excavation sequence. Proper strategies counteracting the challenges need to be formulated and if implemented timely in tunneling of Himalayas so that we can reduce time and cost overrun and enhance safety and stability of the structures.
· Geotextiles as permeable textile materials can be used as reinforcement of embankments, slopes, retaining structures against failure. Geotextiles with high planer permeability (ability to conduct flow within the thickness of the fabric) can be used for the drainage function by collecting and transporting of water in the plain of the drainage layer. They can be used in foundation drains and under-drains etc.
· The DYWI Drill Hollow Bar System is a self-drilling ground control solution for Underground Construction. Installations in weak ground conditions. In addition stabilization of tunnel portals cut and covers areas, forepoling and face stabilization etc. the advantages are Immediate full load bearing capacity over the entire installed bolt length,Drilling, installation and grouting in a single operational step, Minor space requirements for installation even minimization of ground disturbance.
8. Applicability /relevance of the lessons learnt in the context of ICT:-
· It is important that such engineering projects are properly conceptualized. The experience gained on such tunneling projects needs to be documented and made available to engineers all over the country so that appropriate guidelines can be grown for future tunneling works.
Tunnels are generally located in difficult environments in rocks of various types’ hard or soft media and the alignment may traverse zones of various complexities.
It is important to have a very good assessment of geological/ geotechnical conditions before hand to optimize the construction activities. A detailed topographic survey would be required to finalize the alignment of the tunnel and location of adits, if any. Locations of intermediate significant features such as streams or nallas, visible fault zones etc. need to be identified. For tunnels of long lengths or going through a large spread of land, faster methods of survey than the traditional Total Station-based surveys would be helped to. The modern tools of surveys such as Aerial surveys, photo-grammetry-based surveys, GPS based systems which have very good accuracy are to be used.
· Geotextiles, as permeable textile materials are used in contact with soil, rock, earth or any other geotechnical related material as an integral part of civil engineering project, structure, or system.
· The DYWI Drill Hollow Bar features a wide range of applications such as soil nails, micro piles, rock bolts, or ground anchors. Additionally, the DYWI® Drill Hollow Bar System may be used as a Slope and embankment stabilization, anchorage of landslide protection structures.
9. Remarks including suggestions, if any
We have to deal underground structures / Tunneling projects which are create global business environment. That project will be collaboration with foreign agencies which introduced modern techniques and State-of-the Art proposal for design methodology of tunnels. Because underground excavations have been carried out with ASTM technique using various kinds of rock support systems and organizing the most modern equipment which is available for Tunneling.
