2017 – 2018PRE-AP ALGEBRAI

Welcome to pre-AP Algebra I! I anticipate providing the best possible math instruction. In return, I ask that you provide the necessary focus, discipline, and academic commitment I know you are capable of.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

  • Do your best.
  • Be prepared.
  • Be respectful to everyone.
  • Be honest.
  • Have a good attitude.
  • Drinks must be in a spill-proof container. No cans.
  • No food in my classroom during class time.
  • No cell phones unless for academic purposes.
  • Profanity will not be tolerated.
  • Follow all school rules.
  • Laziness is not an option.
  • Take care of restroom and water before the tardy bell.

CONSEQUENCES FOR PERSISTENT MISBEHAVIOR

  • 1st offense – you and I will visit either out in the hall or after class.
  • 2nd offense – 30-minute detention issued and call parent or guardian
  • 3rd offense – referral to assistant principal

SUPPLIES

  • Pencils, Erasers, Grading Pen, Ruler, Notebook Paper, Folder for handouts OR a section of a notebook
  • 1 Graph Paper Composition Book
  • This will be your journal and will be used to take notes daily. I will grade your journal periodically by either giving you a journal quiz or having you turn your journal in so that I can look through it. Organization and good note taking is a key factor of success.
  • Graph paper (This is in addition to the composition book listed above.)
  • TI-84+ calculator
  • If you don’t have one, you can buy one or check one out from the library.
  • We will NOT use this every day. You will be required to learn how to do everything that we do in here BY HAND. The graphing calculator will be useful when we look at application problems.
  • Box of tissues
  • Optional Supplies – It would be very helpful if you could bring the following:

  • Classic FINE tip Crayola markers

GRADING

  • This course will follow the district’s grading policy.
  • Homework will be due when the teacher asks for it and not a moment later. If you turn it in any time after that, it will be considered late.

CLASS WEBSITE

  • You can access my website through Click on Schools, then Whitehouse High School, then Staff, then Traci Mayo.
  • Here you will find the class calendar, handouts, useful links for homework help, my notes and my videos. Notes and videos will be uploaded daily.

REMIND

  • I will text important reminders or announcements frequently using Remind. If you’d like, you can text me questions about homework or anything related to my class. I will respond. Please be patient.

EMAIL

  • Please feel free to email me at f you have questions regarding my class.

TARDY BELL

  • You will need to go to Mrs. Jenkins office to get a tardy slip if you are not in this classroom when the bell rings. This office is at the top of the main stairwell on the foreign language side.

MAKE UP WORK

  • It is your responsibility to get your make-up work if you are absent. If you happen to be absent on the day of a test review but are in class the next day (TEST day) and were present on the days before the review, you are expected to take the test.
  • You will have one day for each day absent to turn in makeup work. For example, if you are absent for an entire week of school, you will have 5 school days to complete the work missed.
  • If you are absent because of an extracurricular event, you are required to get the makeup work BEFORE you go to the event and to turn it in when you return.

EXEMPTIONS

  • Students will follow district policy regarding exemptions. Please see the Student Handbook for more information.

TUTORIALS

  • Lunch tutorials will be offered each week during the B part of the Power Hour on ______.
  • Afternoon tutorials will be offered each week on ______.
  • Other tutorial times are available by appointment only.

TEXTBOOK

  • You have a choice. You can either solely rely on the online textbook, you can check out a hard copy of the textbook, or you can do both.
  • Excuses are unacceptable for incomplete or no homework if you choose to only rely on the online version of the textbook and you have technology problems. It is much easier to work with the hard copy of the textbook.

CELL PHONES

  • I need your undivided attention when you are in my class. Therefore, your phones or any other device you may have must stay in your backpack or in the cell phone bag by my classroom door. It will NOT stay on your desk when you should be paying attention.
  • If this becomes a problem, I will require you to turn your phone in to me every day at the beginning of class.

APPS

  • There are a few helpful apps that you should get on your device.
  • Big Ideas Math Videos – Provides tutorial videos for every example in the Big Ideas Math middle school and high school programs. These videos are available with both English and Spanish audio.
  • Big Ideas Math Solutions – Provides worked out solutions for the odd-numbered exercises in the Big Ideas Math high school programs. The back of the textbook only provides answers, not the steps taken to get to those answers.
