A. 2018 Computer Science Standards for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Information/Action)
1. Update on the California Computer Science Standards Focus Group Meetings (Information)
One of the initial steps in the development of the Computer Science Standards is the convening of three regional focus group meetings. The input of the focus group members and the comments made by the public at the meetings become the basis for the guidelines that the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC) recommend to the State Board of Education (SBE) for consideration. The guidelines direct the work of the Computer Science Standards Advisory Committee (CSSAC).
The focus group meeting dates and locations are:
· Wednesday, November 9, Sacramento County Office of Education (COE) and videoconference locations at Humboldt, San Joaquin, and Monterey COE, 4 to 6 p.m.
· Wednesday, November 16, San Francisco Unified School District, 4 to 6 p.m.
· Wednesday, November 30, San Diego COE and videoconference locations at Riverside COE and Orange County Department of Education, 4 to 6 p.m.
2. Schedule of Significant Events (Timeline) (Information/Action)
The Education Technology Committee will review the Schedule of Significant Events for the 2018 Computer Science Standards for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Attachment 1) and take action to recommend the timeline to the full IQC. The IQC will then take action to recommend the timeline to the SBE.
3. Application for Appointment to the Computer Science Standards Advisory Committee (Information/Action)
The Education Technology Committee will review the Application for Appointment to the CSSAC and take action to recommend the application to the full IQC. The IQC will then take action to recommend the application to the SBE.
Once approved by the SBE, the application will be posted for at least 45 days. The application period will be from January –March 2017. In May 2017, the Education Technology Committee and IQC will review the applications and recommend CSSAC members to the SBE.
