Colored Water Lab
Purpose:
We are doing this lab for three reasons:
· First to develop our skills with the graduated cylinder
· Second to practice reading and following directions completely in Science
· Third to properly record what you see in a Figure and what you see and measure in a Data Table
Materials needed:
· 3 - 150 or 250 mL beakers
· 6 - test tubes
· Labels for the test tubes or a grease pencil
· 1 - Test tube rack
· 1 - 10 mL graduated cylinder
· 1 – 25 or 50 mL graduated cylinder
Directions:
Follow these directions completely and correctly. You may find it helpful to check off each step as you complete it.
- Obtain six test tubes in a rack and label them A, B, C, D, E, or F.
- Fill 1 beaker with about 100 mL of blue water, 1 with red, and 1 with yellow.
- Into test tube A measure 19 mL of red water.
- Into test tube C measure 18 mL of yellow water.
- Into test tube E measure 18 mL of blue water.
- From test tube C measure 4 mL of water and pour the 4mL into test tube D.
- From test tube E measure 7 mL of water, add it to test tube D, and swirl gently.
- From the beaker of blue water measure 4 mL and pour it into test tube F. Then from the beaker of red water measure 7 mL and add it to test tube F. Swirl gently.
- From test tube A measure 8 mL of water and pour it into test tube B. From test tube C measure 3 mL and add it to test tube B. Swirl gently.
- Record all data in Table 1 on back. Be sure to accurately measure the final volume of water in each test tube with a graduated cylinder.
- Draw and label all equipment/results to create “Figure 1.” as explained on back.
- Clean up all equipment, put it back where it came from, and dry off lab station before the end of class.
Data:
- Complete the data table below, listing the final colors, test tube by test tube, in alphabetical order.
- Measure the final volume of water in each test tube, and record it in the final column
Table 1. Colored Water Lab Results
Test Tube / Color of Water / Final Measured Volumeof Water (in mL)
Figure Instructions:
- In the space below, draw a clear figure of all the equipment you used, including the full test tube rack, with each test tube accurately colored to represent your final results.
- Label each piece of equipment properly.
