Colored Water Lab

Purpose:

We are doing this lab for three reasons:

·  First to develop our skills with the graduated cylinder

·  Second to practice reading and following directions completely in Science

·  Third to properly record what you see in a Figure and what you see and measure in a Data Table

Materials needed:

·  3 - 150 or 250 mL beakers

·  6 - test tubes

·  Labels for the test tubes or a grease pencil

·  1 - Test tube rack

·  1 - 10 mL graduated cylinder

·  1 – 25 or 50 mL graduated cylinder

Directions:

Follow these directions completely and correctly. You may find it helpful to check off each step as you complete it.

  1. Obtain six test tubes in a rack and label them A, B, C, D, E, or F.
  2. Fill 1 beaker with about 100 mL of blue water, 1 with red, and 1 with yellow.
  3. Into test tube A measure 19 mL of red water.
  4. Into test tube C measure 18 mL of yellow water.
  5. Into test tube E measure 18 mL of blue water.
  6. From test tube C measure 4 mL of water and pour the 4mL into test tube D.
  7. From test tube E measure 7 mL of water, add it to test tube D, and swirl gently.
  8. From the beaker of blue water measure 4 mL and pour it into test tube F. Then from the beaker of red water measure 7 mL and add it to test tube F. Swirl gently.
  9. From test tube A measure 8 mL of water and pour it into test tube B. From test tube C measure 3 mL and add it to test tube B. Swirl gently.
  10. Record all data in Table 1 on back. Be sure to accurately measure the final volume of water in each test tube with a graduated cylinder.
  11. Draw and label all equipment/results to create “Figure 1.” as explained on back.
  12. Clean up all equipment, put it back where it came from, and dry off lab station before the end of class.

Data:

  1. Complete the data table below, listing the final colors, test tube by test tube, in alphabetical order.
  2. Measure the final volume of water in each test tube, and record it in the final column

Test Tube / Color of Water / Final Measured Volume
of Water (in mL)

Figure Instructions:

  1. In the space below, draw a clear figure of all the equipment you used, including the full test tube rack, with each test tube accurately colored to represent your final results.
  2. Label each piece of equipment properly.
