STEPS TO THE DEGREE

MASTER'S

1)Take Graduate Music Classification Examinations.

2)Meet with advisor to develop a tentative plan of studies for the degree program according to the Program of Studies.

3)Remedy any deficiencies determined by the Graduate Music Classification Examinations.

4)Select a supervisory committee (generally the second semester) in conjunction with the major professor; file Supervisory Committee Form with the Graduate Music Office.

5)For thesis programs, develop a prospectus and present it to the supervisory committee for approval. Submit complete copy of signed prospectus to the Graduate Music Office, and file the Research Approval Form with the FSU Office of Graduate Studies.

6)Complete an official "Program of Studies" form with the major professor (no later than the beginning of the fourth semester) and submit signed copy to the Graduate Music Office.

7)Apply for graduation through the FSU Registrar's Office (final semester).

8)If performance major, register for MV_ 5976-77 and complete recital, then file Master's Recital Form in the Graduate Music Office. *MM Voice Performance students: Please see specific information regarding MVV 5976 in the SPECIAL POLICIES: VOICE section of this Handbook.

9)Register for MUS 8966, complete Comprehensive Examination, and file Master's Comprehensive Exam form in the Graduate Music Office.

10)In thesis programs, after approval of prospectus, register for MUS 5971, complete thesis and thesis defense (MUS 8976), and file Master's Defense form in the Graduate Music Office.

11)For thesis programs, submit the thesis to the Manuscript Clearance Advisor along with the completed Final Term Degree Clearance form by the University deadline.

12)Verify that ALL appropriate forms have been submitted to the Graduate Music Office and the University.

13)The work for the Master’s degree must be completed within seven years from the time the student first registers for graduate credit. Any graduate work transferred from another institution must have commenced not more than seven years prior to completion of the degree for the credits to be applicable to the Master’s degree.

14)Credits and Independent Studies:

a. Thesis Programs. To qualify for a master's degree under this program, the student must complete a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours of credit including thesis credit. At least eighteen (18) of these hours must be taken on a letter-grade basis (A, B, C).

b. Non-Thesis Programs. To qualify for a master's degree under this program, the student must complete a minimum of thirty-two (32) semester hours of course work. At least twenty-one (21) of these hours must be taken on a letter-grade basis (A, B, C).

DOCTORAL

1)Take Graduate Music Classification Examinations (GMCE) and remedy any deficiencies determined by the GMCE.

2)Register for and pass the Doctoral Diagnostic Exam (MUS 8960) and file the Doctoral Exam Form with the Graduate Music Office; during the first academic term.

3)Select a supervisory committee in consultation with the major professor and the Director of Graduate Studies in Music; file Supervisory Committee Form with Graduate Music Office.

4)Meet with advisor to develop study plan for the degree program according to the Program of Study Form and individual student needs.

5)Meet doctoral academic residency requirement of 24 graduate-level credit hours within a 12-month consecutive period.

6)Complete a Program of Studies Form the semester you expect to complete coursework in consultation with the major professor and submit it to the Graduate Music Office.

7)Develop a prospectus for the dissertation/treatise/composition and file a copy of the title and signature pages in the Graduate Music Office. File the Research Approval Form with the FSU Office of Graduate Studies.

8)If performance major, register for and present recitals; file Doctoral Recital form (with programs attached) in Graduate Music Office immediately after each recital.

9)Register for MUS 8964, complete doctoral Preliminary Exam (comprehensives), and file Preliminary Examination form in the Graduate Music Office.

10)Complete Admission to Candidacy form in COM Registrar’s office to allow registration for treatise/thesis/dissertation hours.

11)Apply for graduation through the FSU Registrar's Office (final semester).

12)Register for MUS 8985, successfully complete Defense, and file Defense Form in the Graduate Music Office.

13)Submit the dissertation/treatise to the Manuscript Clearance Advisor along with completed Final Term Degree Clearance form.

14)Verify that ALL appropriate forms have been filed in the Graduate Music Office and the University.

15)All requirements for the Doctoral degree must be completed within five calendar years from the time the student passes the preliminary examination, or the student’s supervisory committee will require that a new preliminary examination be passed.
