“Israel Studies in Language and Society”

Special Issue on “Language and Law in Israel”

Call for Papers

“Israel Studies in Language and Society”, an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal for the Study of Language and Society, invites researchers and lawyers to submit articles to be featured in a Special Issue discussing “Language and Law in Israel”.

Laypersons come across the legal language in a variety of daily circumstances including mortgages, rental contracts, medical treatments, insurance policies, fines, wills and so on. Legal language appears incoherent to the general public: it often happens, indeed, that this language leaves crucial matters beyond the reach of legal laypersons. In addition to its crucial importance for everyday life and the difficulties laypersons have in understanding it, a diversity of further topics in “legal language” are worthy of research.

Accordingly, articles submitted to the Special Issue may deal with the various aspects of the relationship between language and law, such as: applying the language of law – the judicial process and legal interpretation; the Israeli legal discourse – cultural, social and communicational aspects; practical aspects of the relationship between language and law; legal texts and their linguistic complexity; court’s language – stylistic, rhetorical and emotional aspects; the persuasive aspect of the legal language; argumentation and narration in adjudication; verdict’s language as a paradigm of formal modern Hebrew.

Please note these important deadlines for contributions to the special issue:

Submission of abstract (up to 400 words): February 29, 2012

Notification of abstract acceptance: April 15, 2012

Submission of full article: August 31, 2012

Abstracts should include 3-4 bibliographic references. Please note that accepting the abstract does not guarantee the acceptance of the whole article. All articles will be reviewed by two anonymous lectors. The special issue is due to appear in 2013.
