Frank X Walker to Speak at the 16th Annual

Lyman T. Johnson Alumni Homecoming Awards Banquet

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 30, 2006) − Multidisciplinary artist Frank X Walker will be the guest speaker at the Lyman T. Johnson Alumni Constituent Group’s 16th annual Homecoming Awards Banquet at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in downtown Lexington.

Walker is an author, educator and Affrilachian poet. He won the Lillian Smith Book Award in 2004 for Buffalo Dance: the Journey of York. He serves as a visiting professor of rhetoric, writing and communication at Transylvania University. A native of Danville, Walker is a 2005 recipient of the Lannan Literary Fellowship.

The theme for this year’s banquet is Upholding the Torch of Excellence. Each college will select the African-American alumni, faculty or staff person and undergraduate student as its 2006 choice to receive the Torch of Excellence Award and Torch Bearer Award, respectively.

The event also will feature a Nubian Step Show and live music.

The University of Kentucky Black Student Union (BSU), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Center, and other campus groups are hosting several additional events, ranging from a community service project at Calvary Baptist Church to the Mr. and Ms. Black UK Pageant.
