Introduction

Welcome to Hinckley-Big Rock Middle school basketball program. Our program consists of 2 seasons:

-Boys 7th and 8th grade from October-December

-Girls 7th and 8th grade from January-March

Coaches: boys 7th grade – Mr. Sidman, Boys 8th grade- Mr. Jackson, Girls 7th Grade- Mr. Jourdan, Girls 8th grade- Mr. Jackson

Our Mission
Our mission at HBRMS is to develop and prepare the student athletes for the next level by:

-Building Fundamentals

-Learning the rules of the game

-Understanding simple and complex plays

-Building teamwork and communication

-Practicing sportsmanship

-Maintaining eligibility and succeeding in classes.

Coach Sidman

-Boys 7th grade coach

-2nd year at HBRMS

-Teaches 7th and 8th grade science

-U of Illinois and NIU graduate

-Baseball: 2 time varsity letterman, 2 time all conference, academic all state, lead team in ERA senior year, finished 4th in state 6A in 2004

-Basketball: 2 year 6th man award, 2 years of intermural, intermural champions.

Coach Jackson

-Boys and Girls 8th grade

-6th year coaching at HBRMS

-Alumni of Hinckley Elementary and HBR high school

-Waubonnsee Community College graduate

-2 years at NIU studying sport fundamentals and aspects of sports.

-Soccer: coach 2 years at HBRMS, 2 time MVP, All conference, All area honorable mention, 4 year varsity starter, undefeated in middle school.

-Baseball: Summer baseball MVP, Pony League Champ, Golden Glove award senior year, all area honorable mention, Conference Batting Title (.490), Coached at IC for 2 years.

-Track: All state 800m (11th place), Hurdles record, national awards in various events, coach at HBRMS for 5 years.

-Basketball: 2 time MVP, held records in scoring, rebounding and block shots, 2 year high school player, 3 time captain, 2 all star traveling teams (Dekalb and La Grange), coach at HBRMS for 4 years.

Practices

  1. Held after school either 3-5pm or 5-6:30
  2. Early practices have a school mandated study session from 3:10-3:30p.
  3. Be on time and ready to go (shoes on, practice jersey on, and playbook with you).
  4. We encourage you to get help with your school work after school (except away game days) if needed.
  5. If you’re going to miss a practice a signed note needs to be handed in the day before the missed practice.

6. What to bring:

  1. First Practice Starts October 7th 3-5pm

Home Games

  1. Must bring both Home and Away Jerseys, shorts and Warm ups.
  2. 7th grade plays first. Get changed right after school and start warm-ups.
  3. 8th grade must be in the bleachers by 4:15pm. 8th grade game starts after the 7th grade approximately 5:15-5:30
  4. Watch and cheer in bleachers and no fooling around in stands and halls.
  5. 8th grade will have jobs during 7th grade game such as putting ball rack back before start of game and after halftime, Holding bleacher rope, and sweeping floor at halftime. 7th grade will do the same jobs for the 8th grade game.
  6. Must dress up unless instructed not to.

Away Games

Athletes shall bring both uniforms in case of conflicts

-Athletes must dress up to school and game.

-Be at bus on time ready to go

-7th graders may leave right after the 8th grade game upon being signed out by parent. The team not playing will sit respectfully in the bleachers and support HBR.

-Respect and take care of home teams facilities

-Bus will come back to school after game we ask that students call from bus so parents are ready to pick up when the bus gets back to the school.

Expectations

  1. Be at practices and games dressed and ready to play.
  2. Work as a team
  3. Have a good work ethic and try your best everyday
  4. Be respectful to officials, teammates, spectators and coaches.
  5. Watch your mouths and attitudes on and off the court.
  6. If you receive a detention or suspension you will sit out next game.

Eligibility

Runs Thursday-Thursday each week

-Must pass all classes with at least a D

-Teachers may deem athletes ineligible due to classroom behavior until they see fit.

- If you are ineligible 3 weeks in a row by school rules you will not be allowed to participate the rest of the year.

-If you are ineligible you may not attend any practices or games until you are eligible again.

Playing Time

Here at HBRMS playing time is not equal and all players have to earn playing time. We do our best to get everyone into every game but there will be some games we won’t be able to. How we determine playing time is:

-Fundamental skills

-Knowledge of plays

-Work ethic

-Be on time and ready to play

-Teamwork and communication

-Behavior in practice and class

-How well you listen and follow directions.

Acceptable Foods

Below is a list of acceptable foods that a player can have before a game. This prevents players from getting sick or not being able to perform up to their potential due to lack of energy.

-Nuts- We do have a player with allergies to nuts!

Your Commitment

If we want to be successful this year we need everyone to be committed to the team. If you plan on playing we ask you be serious about playing and that you stay eligible and stay out of trouble. By signing this you agree to be committed to the team and follow all rules set by the coaching staff and the school.
