AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a year-long, elective class offered to students who would like to prepare for entrance into a college or university. The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading, note-taking, study skills and college/career activities. Students will participate in field trips to colleges and universities. Students must commit to taking notes in classes on a daily basis and keeping organized by using their AVID binder. Criteria taken into consideration for all applicants include: Grades, interview, conduct, attendance, state test scores, and teacher recommendations.

What is AVID?AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a year-long, elective class offered to students who would like to prepare for entrance into a college or university. The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading, note-taking, study skills and college/career activities. Students will participate in field trips to colleges and universities. Students must commit to taking notes in classes on a daily basis and keeping organized by using their AVID binder. They will be supported in their classes by teachers who are trained in AVID strategies. These strategies will strengthen student preparedness to take more challenging academic courses in high school and college.
Today, AVID has been adopted by nearly 4,500 schools in 45 states and the District of Columbia and 16 counties/territories, and serves approximately 400,000 students, grades 4-12. Elkins Pointe Middle School is seeking a select group of students to enroll in the AVID elective during the 2016-17 school year.
The AVID Student ProfileAVID students typically meet one or more of the following:
· Highly motivated, demonstrating individual determination and responsibility
· Grades of A, B or C
· Potential and desire to go to college
· Mid to high standardized test scores in both Math and English Language Arts
· Good attendance and behavior record
· Willing to commit to 1-2 hours of homework each night
· Willing to commit to Community service
· Teacher Recommendations
AVID is NOT:
· An “at-risk” or remedial program
· For students who don’t complete their homework
· For students who consistently display poor behavior
· A program for unmotivated students
· A study hall
