Root Words / Prefixes / Suffixes

There are 15 weeks throughout the year during which you will have a set of 10 vocabulary words. (This will be in addition to unit vocabulary.) By studying roots, prefixes, and suffixes, you will be able to identify unknown vocabulary more easily. You will complete one notecard for each vocabulary word. Notecards will be checked at random ondue dates, and you will have a quiz shortly after, unless you are told otherwise. (Absences will not excuse you from the quiz, because you have the words and dates in advance.) You may have to use multiple sources to find the definition.

Suggestions: PrefixSuffix.com – click on “Root Search” on left; change drop down search to “All Roots” and mark “Anywhere” circle. Try “Googling” the root + definition. Search for it using the Microsoft Word dictionary. Look up the root in an actual dictionary – even a word that includes the root will usually list the breakdown of roots shortly following the word. Note: you will not be excused for “not finding” the root – just keep looking or ask me BEFORE the cards are due!

The notecard should look like this:

Word: Domin – consider putting on opposite side from definition for studying purposes

Definition: master, that which is under control
